I am the owner of one of those adult groups MSN is letting go. I don't in any way believe this should be happening. 1) If parents would not only look into, but UTILIZE the child protection utilities not only MSN offered (though very difficult for most people to find!), but also any number of the utilities offered on the web, then this would not be occuring. 2) Being the owner of an adult group, I did NOT allow anyone who did not have a profile that contained at LEAST THEIR AGE. No, this is not perfect, but by not allowing those who didn't list their age, I feel confident that I did what I could to make certain that no underage individuals were able to enter. However, MANY owners of adult groups had no qualms about accepting anyone for membership, regardless of whether or not they listed their ages. This, I believe, is a major cause of what MSN is doing now. If all owners turned away those without ages in their profiles, then this would have never been a problem. - and 3) By disallowing Adult and Mature content to be viewed and participated in by ADULTS, MSN is severly limiting our rights to Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of Expression. As far as I'm concerned, this is a disgusting act on their part. If adults want to limit what they see, then THOSE ADULTS can choose to either not visit those sites and groups, or use any of the multitude of blocking programs to keep Mature and Adult content off of their computers. No one needs MSN, Yahoo, or any other web service to prevent their veiwing it.
MSN could have EASILY avoided any of this by not only making it impossible for anyone without their age in their profile to join these groups, including my own; but also by making child-safe technology immediately availiable, rather than simply having a screen giving the choices of "Yes, I'm Over 18" or "No I'm Not". What curious child is going to click onto "No I'm Not"?????? MSN should have know better to begin with about all of this. It would have saved them a lot of time, and saved those of us who choose to participate in Adult and Mature content a lot of grief.
