  1. Review - AVG Anti-Virus Free

    7.5.524a1293 (Apr 19, 2008)

AVG now nags at you to upgrade with obtrusive, intermittent pop-ups. And the free version is now next to impossible to find on their revamped website.

This is a sad downturn for one of the last decent free Anti-virus products.

  2. Review - Mozilla Firefox for Windows (v2)

    2.0.0.14 (Apr 17, 2008)

I can't rate this version of Firefox highly knowing FF3 is about to hatch. FF3 is a massive improvement on this clunky, slow, legacy browser.

It's commendable that Mozilla are keeping this secure while FF3 bakes, but there's really no reason any more to recommend this version to anyone who isn't already using it. Get them to use the Beta instead.

  3. Review - Mandriva Linux

    2008.1 (Apr 12, 2008)

    Glorious. Simply glorious.

All issues I'd experienced from the betas/release candidates have been eliminated, resulting in a smooth, full-featured, secure and gorgeous distro. I implore anyone thinking of using Linux to download the Live CD and let it make beautiful love to your PC.

  4. Review - Adblock Plus

    0.7.5.4 (Apr 11, 2008)

The Web-surfer's best defense against the plague of online advertising - absolutely essential for Firefox.

  5. Review - WinZip

    11.2 Build 8094 (Apr 10, 2008)

There are far better and FREE alternatives to this greedy and decrepit piece of code:

IZarc, Tugzip, Peazip, 7-zip, Winrar...to name but a few.

  6. Comment - Windows XP SP3 released to manufacturing, downloadable 4/29

    11.2 Build 8094 (Apr 22, 2008 - 8:13 AM)

Ooo, brave choice. Sabayon is very well put together, but the whole Gentoo thing of compiling your own stuff eventually proved too difficult for this noob to master.

"The user-interface is sluggish at best, painful in attempts to get use to, and extremely problematic if you try to enable compiz/beyrl"

I would disagree with this. I've been using Mandriva for a couple of months now and have found it laughably simple getting compiz working through their fab control center. And I've not noticed any real sluggishness in the UI, although it's not noticeably better than than windows either (sans compiz bells and whistles).

Oh, and this IS comparing it to windows on the same machine.

  7. Comment - Recent Firefox update caused crashes, possible hole

    11.2 Build 8094 (Apr 17, 2008 - 11:38 AM)

Crying wolf after it's been shot dead? Amazing timing, Betanews.

Way to post On Topic there, Hollywood.

  9. Comment - Mandriva updates its Linux distribution for spring

    11.2 Build 8094 (Apr 17, 2008 - 5:52 AM)

tscar13 - I don't know what scares me more. The utter tripe you post or the fact you've chosen to post it HERE, on a website that exists to discuss Tech news and review software. Yes, there are problems in the world, but you aren't going to solve anything by prosetlysing in the wrong places, now, are you?

Wouldn't LittleGreenFootballs be a better place for your insane rants against the multiple boogeymen determined to end our so-called 'freedoms'? Oh, and it might help to seek out a counsellor to help deal with all that supressed rage you're obviously itching to batter people with. Seriously, man - SEEK HELP.

  10. Comment - Mandriva updates its Linux distribution for spring

    11.2 Build 8094 (Apr 16, 2008 - 8:36 AM)

Of all the distro's I've tried (Ubuntu -> Mepis -> Sabayon -> PCLOS -> Mandriva) I have to say that Mandriva best suits my needs as a newcomer to Linux. It's fast, very stable, and has more than I need for everything I could use a PC for, barring the much lamented Linux gaming blind-spot. As a Windows refugee I greatly appreciate the Control Centre which provides access to practically every important facet of the OS.

It's beginning to grate a little that Ubuntu gets so much coverage when fast, user-friendly and up-to-date distros like this one are out there but only mentioned once in a blue moon, but I guess being No #6 in the Distrowatch rankings isn't all that bad.
