3.0 Beta (Sep 28, 2005)
dkg1,
AU saves every piece of deleted files and reg keys and you can easily restore them if something goes wrong.
System utilities like AU, are tools for advanced users thus can be dangerous if user doesn't know how to use them safely.
AceUtils registry cleaner is safer than most others tools of its kind. In my opinion, it is much less aggressive than it should be.
Tools that could not harm system are simply useless for an advanced user.
AceUtils is not perfect (yet) but is much better and more complete than most similar applications currently available.
Highly Recomended
6.0 Beta 5 (Sep 26, 2005)
BeerStud,
FreeBSD was never targeted client-desktop market. In fact all *nix/BSD OSes are pure server systems even though many users use them as Windows alternative. However, FreeBSD works just fine with both KDE and Gnome. BTW I agree with you that KDE (and Gnome) is far from complete compared to Win or MacOSX desktop. Maybe in the future...
>> Plug & Play is not well implemented in this OS
Although PNP was indended for Windows OS only, it is well documented and works just fine in FreeBSD. You should blame hardware manufacturers for limited support in both Linux and BSD OS.
>> Support is limited to forums
Sorry but that's not true. There are hundreds of BSD consaltunts in all countries. FreeBSD also has supporting mailing lists, forums, user-groups etc.
I really respect your opinion, but do you rate FreeBSD with three just because it is a server OS and not a colourful Windows alternative? Unless off course you are not happy using it as server...
6.0 Beta 4 (Sep 9, 2005)
It's coming !
FreeBSD is absolutely the best OS for server use. Most people think that all *nix-like systems are the same, this is not true. FreeBSD is a full blown OS not just a kernel and the usual GNU utils collection.
I have to disagree with a previous reviewer who said that FreeBSD is not for desktop users. FreeBSD includes Xorg, Gnome and KDE and can run any available desktop application. If user knows how to configure X and desktop I see no problem using FreeBSD as a desktop OS. In fact its even faster and more stable than most Linux.
Finally we should not forget that MacOSX is based on FreeBSD, many Microsoft tech stuff like sockets are also based on FreeBSD technology and the fact that many US military projects rely on FreeBSD code.
2.5.0 (Sep 1, 2005)
With so many Windows system utilities available, is very difficult to choose the right thing. And what is that called "the right thing"?
Some of those system maintenance utilities have a bloat of features though most of them are useless, sometimes even dangerous because of buggy coding and limited stability.
Others offer features like those found in Ace Utilities but fail in terms of speed, stability, quality or customer support.
Ace Utilities is an exceptional software that has just the necessary tools for normal and advanced users. Features like a fully configurable and parametric history cleaner, junk file eraser, registry cleaner, duplicates finder, auto start programs manager, uninstaller and an excellent disk analyser, are all included in the package.
All these modules work fast and safely clean user's machine from useless garbage. Something really interesting is the fact that each AU module works much better than dedicated programs, although the whole AU footprint is less than 2 MB (!). That makes Ace Utilities one of the smallest and most usefull tool collection currently available.
Advanced users, can easily modify AU default filters, adding new plugins that can detect and clean any kind of folders, files and registry keys. All plugins, are written in a self explained scripted form and saved as text files thus editing them is an easy task using a simple text editor.
Ace Utilities also include a deleted file shreder and secure deletion feature, something missing in most competitive programs. It fully supports the known secure algorithms used by US Government and military.
Customer support is another "plus". I wish all software developers were as responsive as Hari, AceUtils author.
If you really want a complete and safe system utilities set, get Ace Utilities.
Highly Recomended
1.0.0.64 Beta (Aug 25, 2005)
Google finally has an IM, that's good news. Even more interesting is the fact that they've built it over Jabber protocol, an open and widely accepted form of IM communication. Thus, communicating with third party messengers is very simple task.
As a messenger client, Google Talk has very small disk and memory footprint and works really fast and stable though still a beta. Something I really liked is that it's a single-exe application. No extra drivers, codecs, dll, nothing at'all, just a single executable and the uninstaller.
Google Talk, works excellent without requiring any additional opened ports in your personal or corporate firewall, not even when using voice chat. That's something Microsoft should learn from (MS own Windows Messenger requires a UPNP enabled firewall or opening all ports from 5004 to 65535).
Google Talk currently has only the necessary features, like text and voice chat. And that is good. Who really needs silly things like all that stuff found in bloated IM like ICQ, MSN and others?
Voice quality is exceptional, much better than anything used before (Skype, MSN, ICUII etc). It has better quality than many hardware based VoIP systems too.
Something I've missed is the file transfer feature. I'm sure, Google will implement that in a future release. Don't forget that Google Talk is still an early beta. Google have plans to support SIP and probably some more protocols in the future and that is a good move for professionals and corporate clients.
Google Talk is currently my favorite IM, I hope it will remain thin and ads-free and not become just another "does everything" instant messaging garbageware.
Highly Recomnended

Rest in piece Robert.

I'm getting tired reading how fast and stable is Firefox. Unfortunately my own experience isn't that good...
After installed 1.0 i've tweaked its settings to max, and used it in parallel with IE6 (WinXP-sp2). Using stopwatch, i couldn't find a single website that renders faster in FF than with IE6. Besides that, many sites could not even render correctly with Firefox.
Things i liked are tabs and other minor ergonomic features. BTW i hate extensions, don't want experimental buggy and unstable code in my setups.
1.0.0.64 Beta (Oct 30, 2004 - 11:24 AM)
Linux has more software (!!!), you must be kidding. Most of open source apps, except some, are useless buggy crap build by amateurs.

I wonder how fast Corel will kill PSP, same they did with other acquired applications.
