  1. Review - MobileVideo for iPod

    3.6 (Sep 2, 2009)

    Nag ware.

Every time on start up it nags you to buy the paid version. I don't use nag ware as a matter of principle. Either make the product free, without nag, or go commercial. There are better ways to promote your paid upgrade without completely annoying and irritating the users of your free product.

  2. Review - Drm-Removal

    3.0.9 (Oct 7, 2007)

Personally I think anyone who rates the software down solely because they do not agree with the goal of the software, instead of the actual quality of the product, should be labelled a troll.

This product does what it is advertised to do and is comparably priced to other products that do the same, but provides features that other products in this area do not, such as the video drm removal.

  3. Review - ClamWin Free Antivirus

    0.91.2 (Aug 23, 2007)

I always find it amusing when someone with an agenda attacks a quality open source product, and it always makes me question their motives. This is especially true when the make blanket comments about how open source cannot possibly be good.

First of all, about the ability of ClamAV to detect viruses, you know, studies can be tweaked to produce results that the study operator wants them to produce. Or more appropriately, the party paying the study operator.
A nice link describing the problems with "AV Test" studies.
    http://www.theregister.c...8/09/anti_virus_testing/

Next your claim that real time protection is required for everyone. That is also, a blatant misstatement. A large number of power users, including hard core gamers, PREFER products which are not real time AV, because of the major performance hits such real time protection products typically have for power applications and gaming. They trust themselves to protect themselves from most threats, and use AV products that do on-demand scanning as a safety net.

There are different products for different needs, and then there are also people who oppose particular segments of the market because of their own self interest, or because of some misguided ideology.

In any event, to down rate a product for the reasons you stated, without taking into account that your needs do not dictate everyone's needs, is short sighted at best, if not an outright attempt to slander a product for some reason we are not able to ascertain without knowing more about you.

  4. Review - Active Keylogger Home

    2.0 (Apr 24, 2007)

I'll counter your rating just on general principle, since your review was not based on the product and its intended use.

What, exactly, is evil about a tool that lets you monitor YOUR OWN COMPUTER, and is made for that explicit purpose?

Stop the kneejerk reaction and think about what a product really is before you just lash out and try to rate it based on your ignorance.

  5. Review - Miranda IM

    0.7 Test Build 10 (Jan 19, 2007)

    @brotherS

But the point is that such a widely used feature shouldn't require all of that. It should be built in to the UI.

  6. Comment - Where there's smoke: Apple warranty stance raises troubling questions

    0.7 Test Build 10 (Nov 23, 2009 - 9:33 PM)

I have to ask if Carmi has ever seen the inside of a smoker's computer or not?

The tar build up can be horrendous and personally, as a tech, I won't work on a system that has gotten to that point either. It's all of the disgusting aspects of smoking multiplied and concentrated in build ups on the core components. I can't say for sure how unsafe it is, but I do know how disgusting and gross it is, and the only option I offer to people who bring me a system like that is to replace it.

  7. Comment - Murdoch: 'We intend to charge for all our news Web sites'

    0.7 Test Build 10 (Aug 7, 2009 - 4:19 PM)

Those of you who say Fox is not fair and balanced don't watch it.

Fox is the only major cable news network that honestly presents both sides of nearly every issue. And unlike MSNBC, whose efforts at presenting opposing viewpoints end up being nothing more than finding someone they can character assassinate or mock, Fox finds reasonable and intelligent people to present opposing viewpoints. Even on their admittedly conservative leaning opinion shows (O'Reilly and Hannity) both of them regularly have intelligent, well presented individuals to present views in opposition to theirs.

Contrast that to Chris Matthews, who finds the person he can most easily mock and or denigrate to present views opposing his.

But since he's liberal, and mocking and denigrating conservatives, that's ok, because you agree with him.

I won't deny Fox News leans slightly to the right, but that doesn't mean they aren't fair and balanced.

BTW, all of that said, Murdoch is off his rocker if he thinks he can use the WSJ model for the rest of his news site network.

On that point, I think we can all pretty much agree.

  8. Comment - Hackers Open Up Mac OS X Leopard for PC

    0.7 Test Build 10 (Nov 5, 2007 - 11:14 PM)

I am finding this to be less and less an issue. Either it will work with Wine/Crossover Office, or for those few things that actually require XP, I can fire one up in a Virtual Machine. And yes, usb ports can be setup to pass through to the VM, so the digital camera will appear to be hooked up directly to the XP Virtual Machine as far as your program is concerned.

I'd much rather only use Windows when I have to rather than full time, and don't mind booting up a VM from time to time. It's amazing how little that happens for me now though.
