  1. Review - Mono for Windows

    2.6 Preview 1 (Nov 12, 2009)

Would it be better to write an Development Environment for Linux rather than writing Mono for Windows ? Sorry but I don't get the idea of Mono on Windows.

  2. Review - VirtualBox

    3.0.10.54047 (Oct 29, 2009)

May be BN download has been updated. There was a build issue when the bin was released: "The 3.0.10 binaries that briefly appeared on the web site suffer from a last minute regression that breaks software virtualization (not VT-x nor AMD-V)"

The build has been refreshed: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

  3. Review - Linux Kernel

    2.6.32-rc3 (Oct 5, 2009)

    cowgaR "tried on Windows Se7en RC1 b7100 - FAILED, even builds 7260 or 7264"

According to your last comments, it seems like you know that Linux is an OS and I assume you know the meaning of an OS. If so then why do you still insist to try repeatedly to run a Linux kernel in Windows? It's like buying a car tire and try to eat it as cereal for breakfast and claiming that one knows what cereal is.

You might think you know something technical. And it's OK and legitimate to try a Linux kernel and not liking it. But the way you proceeded shows that you don't know what you are talking about. I am sorry if this sounds offensive but your comment is totally absurd, there is no ground for any technical debate.

  4. Review - Linux Mint

    7.0 "Gloria" (Oct 2, 2009)

Over-hyped, not really that more convenient. Quite the contrary in my case.

It is true that Mint could save you sometimes as Codecs and the GUI is more polished. From a standard Ubuntu, it is possible to do these customizations in 1 hour or may be a day (which will gives the user the opportunity to learn and play).

For the benefit of Mint's "better" look, there is a huge downside. The user is limited to Mint way of managing: it becomes difficult to add 3rd party repository. In case of technical issue, I got much better support on Ubuntu forum than on Mint's forum.

I have tried Mint on two machines. I am not convinced at all by the Mint's Menu and software repository. I find the overall user experience with Ubuntu is better: more frequent update, more flexible, better support. Even the the ugly GUI, once customized becomes better than Mint. For example, Ubuntu's 2 panels menu/taskbar is better. In case you decide to add a bottom dock, it doesn't change the menu which is on the top. With Mint single taskbar (like Windows) you'll need to change some habits.

Sorry Mint, at the next Ubuntu 9.10 release, I will replace all my Mint machines by Ubuntu.

EDIT #1: Answer to budzis (5th post later): hope you can see my answer as it is not possible to answer to your comments. I didn't want to go into too much details in my original post. But yes, I can add a 2nd panel, remove the Mint Menu and have the standard Gnome menu. But after that, it is still not possible to add a 3rd party software source which is outside of Mint repository. Because the system is managed within Mint boundaries which may be good for some but I find it restrictive. I hope you will accept that some may need features outside of Mint standard repositories. My point was it is possible to customize Ubuntu to make it equal or better than Mint GUI. I have tried both (Gnome GUI and Mint, AND I learnt everything from scratch). After a while, I find the Gnome GUI more practical.

  5. Review - Adobe Flash Player for Linux

    10.0.22.87 (Jul 31, 2009)

    Linux 64bits version not working

  6. Comment - Ubuntu 9.10 upgraders report frustration

    10.0.22.87 (Nov 10, 2009 - 9:28 AM)

You may want to stay with Ubuntu LST (Long Term Support) which is release every 2 years. Or go with Debian stable release. Ubuntu 6 months release cycle is to align with Gnome release cycle. So either the user decides to try the new stuffs and may get some stability issues or stay with stable versions and wait longer time in between.

  7. Comment - Ubuntu 9.10 upgraders report frustration

    10.0.22.87 (Nov 10, 2009 - 12:18 AM)

In the new 9.10, I like very much the GUI, Ubuntu One (free 2GB cloud base storage & sync) and the Ubuntu Software Store.

Xubuntu works flawlessly. As for Ubuntu, I am rather on the unluckly side. I have experienced some instabilities. One of the machines even freezes randomly for no apparent reason. I think it's hardware related. Because the issues I got on two Ubuntu machines are totally different. I would suggest to wait a few more weeks, hoping there will be fixes in system updates.

  8. Comment - Unconvinced by Windows 7? Ubuntu 9.10 debuted today!

    10.0.22.87 (Oct 29, 2009 - 7:14 PM)

Was waiting for the final release to update all the computers at home and for friends to Ubuntu 9.10. As for the title, there might be people "Unconvinced by Windows 7". I am rather among those who "don't need Windows anymore".

  9. Comment - Why I chose Windows 7 over Snow Leopard (and you should, too)

    10.0.22.87 (Sep 21, 2009 - 8:19 PM)

Here is the fastest Windows, guaranteed unhackable and cost $0: use your old Windows XP in a Virtual Machine. The host will be Linux running Virtualbox. Set the VM network settings so that XP in the VM can only access the local LAN and zero access to the Internet. That is how I setup for my wife to use Office 2007 at home.

  10. Comment - Why I chose Windows 7 over Snow Leopard (and you should, too)

    10.0.22.87 (Sep 16, 2009 - 11:41 PM)

So you are a PC and you think people should choose Windows 7? That's presumptuous Have you tried Linux and spent as much time using it as you did for Mac or Windows? If not give it a try, that Linux you should choose. Not Win7.
