  1. Comment - WinFS Examples in Action at PDC

Um, VB6 applications still run just fine, even with the .NET framework. Ugh.

Going forward making advancements and great changes to the language, older code needs to be updated IF -- and only if -- you want to access the power of the .NET framework. If you don't want the framework, you can still compile a VB6 application just fine.

  2. Comment - MSDN Opens Up to Firefox, Opera

That's a limitation/feature of Firefox; it doesn't allow ActiveX controls (such as the Windows Update control) to be run.

Because of the high risk action that Windows Update is doing -- downloading and installing software & operating system components -- even if Windows Update switched to say, a Java applet, it wouldn't be able to run. In other words, Microsoft has literally zero choice: it's either ActiveX or nothing.

What the really should do, IMO, is just build a client that runs on Windows that will do the update. Then there's no reliance on a web browser to get your updates (which makes little sense anyway).

  3. Comment - Docs: Ballmer Vowed to 'Kill' Google

    (Sep 6, 2005 - 6:05 PM)

How can one murder a company?

Honestly, if you've ever watched Steve in person or in an interview (see him at channel9.msdn.com), you'll notice how he is a motivator and a emotionally charged person to say the least. Killing Google is just a way of saying he wants to defeat his competition, which is both expected and healthy in a capitalist environment.

We've been using the Visual Studio 2005 beta at work. Brilliant piece of software. From the looks of it, they're really putting a big effort behind the .NET framework.
