  1. Review - Registry Workshop

    2.3.1 (Feb 9, 2005)

This is a nice one. Among those registry editors I've tried (this one, RegHance, Regedit Extension, Registry Organizer, RegCool, and a few others) this is the one that suits my taste best.

A full registry backup took ~4 minutes which is a bit too much for my taste, the comparer can only compare opened .reg files and not 2 backups, so this is not the program I'll use for backups and tracking registry changes.

  2. Review - RegEdit Extensions

    1.0 (Feb 9, 2005)

    (Opinion after 10mins of usage)
    Contra:
-Didn't ask where to install. Probably overwrites regedit.exe so this isn't that bad.
-What is the 'mail' option good for? I certainly don't need it.
-Tools menu is empty, well, this is a beta.
-Copy/paste works with data, but subtrees are only pasteable back to their original locations (so it's like an undo after a cut/delete operation).
-Other competitors offer registry backup, snapshot compare, etc.
    -Binary/DWORD data not searchable.

    Pro:
-Multiple data are selectable (no need to select & delete one-by-one).
-Offers few extensions but those are the ones that are needed.
-Integrates into regedit, as easy to use as the original.
-Bookmarks appear IExplorer-like (ie. drop-down menu not as a separate window). This isn't the case with many other registry editors.

Simple util with few extras but that means less unneeded stuff and not lack of useful functions, most really needed functions are there.

  3. Review - RegCool

    3.102 (Feb 9, 2005)

    I. Language
English translation is incomplete, some labels are still in German.

    II. GUI
-Bookmarks only reachable through a separate window that needs to be opened.
-Useless and too large icons in toolbar.
-There's no 'add to bookmarks' quickbutton (need to open bookmarks window for that too!).
-After jumping to an address using the explorer bar the treeview doesn't follow (well, it does jump to the vicinity, but the actual node is not even visible sometimes).

    III. Search
-There's no option to stop search after first found occurence, only to 'find all'.
-Search for a well-hidden registry key took 52secs (normal regedit did it in 63s), not much of an improvement.
-To my great annoyance I found that the search process ALWAYS starts at HIGH priority, that is unacceptable! And there's no option/setting to change this behaviour. This alone was enough to convince me not to use this util.
    -DWORD/binary data are not searchable.

    IV. Others
-Snapshot compare results only in HTML or text format - why not a tree?
-Program exited after 30secs of freezing my PC with 'memory violation' error. This happened only once though.
-'Registry tracker' menu option shown but not implemented.

Only really positive feature of this program that's missing from other registry editors (I've seen RegCool, RegEdExt, RegEditor, RegHance, Registry Organizer, Registry Workshop) is that complete subtrees can be copied from one node to another.

    Rating: 3 = this isn't anything special.

  4. Review - SmartFTP (x86)

    1.0 Build 983.9 Beta (Nov 6, 2004)

So far I've tried CuteFTP Pro, FlashFXP, SmartFTP and FileZilla and IMO SmartFTP is the best among them.
'Vertical' arrangement of connection windows (mentioned by the previous reviewer) can be achieved by using the auto-arrange/vertical option in the view menu.

  5. Review - PeerGuardian for Windows 2000/XP/2003

    1.99b pr14 (Nov 6, 2004)

IP filters can be imported into personal firewalls, some p2p clients, DNS hookers, etc.
