"(Please note I don't condone murdering idiots.)"
I do(in droves, better still, use them for weapon testing), however, beyond that i have to agree with you, sci-fi horror stories of an apocolyptic virus that destroys our culture as we know it, are just that, science FICTION

this is a clear cut case of buisness tactics

Look, patches fix problems or add functionality. period.
thats what they are for. they work, I know.
computers will never be completely secure. period.
thus no-mater how patched, fire-walled, anti spyware/virused, and no matter how informed the user is, there will be people who figure out how to put viruses and spyware on your computer.
I know it, you know it, most of you have even mentioned something along those lines
that said,
windows sucks and is evil, even so, I and meny other people use it. most virus makers arent *super* intelligent, they go for known security breaches to infiltrate their viruses. Thus, if you seal the breach, you kill the majority of viruses you are going to come across. do you still need your virus/spyware protection? of course you do!!! does the user still need to be told what NOT to do? of course he does... do the patches sometimes catch things that the virus/spyware protection doesnt? D**N STRAIGHT THEY DO!!! the companies making said protection software do it -
*With the Assumption that their Users have Fully Patched their OS*
(thats as close to underlining as im gonna get)
