  1. Review - Mozilla Firefox for Windows (v2)

    1.5.0.1 (Feb 1, 2006)

I was starting to get a bit worried when the last minor update disable 3 of my extensions.
I knew exactly how to fix them, they were all easy to fix (for me), but how many less-knowledgeable people didn't know how to fix them? How many users are lost due to these kinds of issues?
It's not neccessarily Mozilla's fault but someone needs to take in the extra responsibility of ensuring extensions are fixed - even for small updates like these.
3/15 of my extensions failing is definitely an issue. Mozilla Update needs to recruit people to do a brief compatability check then, if needed, update the single installation file that causes some extensions to fail on minor upgrades.

By the way, a developer simply extending the FF version number that the extension is compatible with, may cause other problems like failing extensions after FF upgrades so that's not neccessarily a 100% solution.
So long as nothing is being done, Firefox IS losing out.

  2. Review - MSN Messenger for Windows

    7.5.0322 (Dec 19, 2005)

They really need to release a new version. (not just upgrades to the current version)
The interface is outdated, the program's a memory hog and it includes tons of useless stuff.
Including a search bar (who searches from a messenger - not me), annoying ad bar, wrongly sized message backgrounds (800x600 not 1024x768 so they look pixelated where they're stretched)
In fact the only good things this program has going for it are:
-Emoticons and the ability to include your own custom emoticons.
-the fact that my friends use it

If I didn't have friends who used it, I'd probably be using Yahoo which is much better than this.

In this new version I'm hoping they've fixed those stupid random connection errors - only time will tell I guess.

Their lack of support for older Windows OS is ridiculous.
How exactly am I supposed to upgrade a 60MB RAM computer to Windows XP??? It's a technical impossibility - and I tried it!
Luckily I have a new computer but not everyone has a computer good enough (and fast enough) for Windows XP.

  3. Review - Pidgin for Windows

    2.0.0 Beta 1 (Dec 19, 2005)

It's difficult to use. If I was going to combine my MSN and Yahoo Messengers, it would have to be a lot simpler than this.

Everything is a chore, from changing my status and sorting my friends lists to enabling a "plug-in" (who needs 13 plugins anyway? They should be options in an options menu)

The interface gives me a headache and everything takes that much longer to do, it's just not worth the bother. The annoying more-info pop-ups when I move the cursor over a contacts name are the last straw.
This has great potential but it is a long way from achieving anything useable in the long-run.
I'm sticking with seperate messengers for now.
It is better than Trillian though (and for the record - I didn't like that either)

  4. Review - LimeWire for Windows

    4.9.38 Beta (Dec 15, 2005)

Limewire is good. It is VERY resource heavy, I managed OK on 512RAM (XP) but any thing less and this program struggles.

Limewire has a good network, although this was recently hit by P2P throttling by my provider.
3 Kb/s is not my idea of fun.
I switched to Cabos which is less system intensive and can still connect OK through my IP.

I remember the old Limewire fondly (before my IP blocked the higher ports that it uses)

Rated 4/5 (-1 for being a system hog)

  5. Review - Fasterfox

    1.0.0 (Dec 7, 2005)

I'd already made all of the changes manually.

It is certainly handier to have them all in one extension. Stops the prefetching in firefox from downloading pages I don't want and speeds up my firefox all in one go!
    What more could you want???

(Jumped from v.81 to 1.0 - does that mean this extension has reached the end of features to be added? At least until the next Firefox version 2.0?)

  6. Comment - Google Betas New Browser Toolbar

    1.0.0 (Jan 30, 2006 - 3:18 PM)

It's not very often you see the words "Google" and "Beta" in the same sentence! (sarcasm)

Oh well, I guess someone's gotta keep BetaNews in business!

  7. Comment - MTV Adds Programming to iTunes

Where's The Daily Show and Crank Yankers?

  8. Comment - Revolution to Sell for Less Than $300

    1.0.0 (Jan 20, 2006 - 12:35 PM)

    Yeah sure they have...

The phenomenal success of the GameCube proves that does it???
I don't think so. They were doing their best stuff way back with the NES and SNES.
They have nothing now. They're releasing a new console months (if not years) after the ps3 and xbox360 for a knockdown price of $300.

Sure they're gonna make a profit from selling $300 consoles in a world that's broke from buying 360's, ps3's and their games.

Dumb fanboys like you, aren't gonna help Nintendo take over the world with kiddies games on an underpowered, underpriced, late released console.
You're the moron that needs to get a clue.

  9. Comment - Revolution to Sell for Less Than $300

    1.0.0 (Jan 20, 2006 - 11:28 AM)

Just because it's cheap, doesn't mean it's any good!

  10. Comment - Firefox 2.0 Alpha, MacTel Version Soon

    1.0.0 (Jan 16, 2006 - 3:28 PM)

I don't really need any other functions for my Firefox.

I'd appreciate it being more stable (plenty of crashes before this last patch so hopefully it's already been sorted)
The memory usage doesn't really bother me. It could definitely be improved on though.
200kb memory usage in an hours surfing is WAY too much.
Just from surfing forums too - no porn involved :)
