  1. Review - eSQL Manager

    0.35 (Jan 25, 2003)

For what the program sets out to do, it's fully functional and accomplishes it's goal. It is an excelent MySQL database management program. However it has several issues under linux with installation, including needing the java runtimes, and several segmentation faults under different versions (It runs best under BlackDown). The application's features are all well designed, the implementation is lacking, as is the performance/stability I'd expect from this tool.

  2. Comment - Android 1.5: Two days and counting

    0.35 (Apr 28, 2009 - 6:03 PM)

There's a little misinformation here. Nowhere in Xavier's blog post (linked above) mentioned this was 1.5 RC1, and the build itself is tagged as R1 (Release 1) rather than RC (Release Candidate).

Additionally, 1.5 OS images have shipped from Google. HTC has posted them for the Android Developer Phone 1 already, as they require little to no modification. The other carriers likely received them at the same time. Now it's up to those carriers to add whatever features they want to the core images, and prepare them for an OTA. The ADP image for instance, which I installed yesterday, doesn't include IM capabilities other than Google Talk, where as T-Mobile adds support for MSN, AIM, and whatever else they see fit. They also add their "5 favs" app, and I've heard they bundle some other software with it such as Amazon UnBox (I've never used a T-Mobile build, so I can't say for sure what the differences are, just that there are differences).

Either way, it's in the carrier's hands now, and it'll be when the carriers finish developing their specific feature sets that they'll start releasing this to the wild.

All of the information I've posted here can be found on the XDA developer's forum, the T-Mobile forum, and various google groups.

  3. Comment - Google blocks paid apps on unlocked G1 thanks to 'rip and return' loophole

    0.35 (Feb 27, 2009 - 7:37 PM)

Google didn't do anything to the devices. They made a change to the marketplace server, so that it doesn't return copy-protected app listings to the marketplace app being run on an dev phone. Simple as that.

As a dev phone owner, I'm quite pissed off at it, since there's more rooted G1 users than dev phone users, and they're doing exactly what Google fears (and IMO are more likely to do it). All Google did with this was piss off the people who put their apps in the marketplace to begin with, while doing nothing to solve the real problem of rooted phones being able to exploit the system. I'd be more forgiving if they blocked ALL rooted phones from those apps, but really, they need a better control method. It isn't even right to call it DRM - they're simply installing the application to a protected directory that only the root user has access to.

  4. Comment - Reports: SK Telecom, Sprint may be looking at a partnership

    0.35 (Jul 17, 2008 - 12:39 PM)

SK Telecom + Sprint actually seems fairly likely, given that Sprint and Earthlink have been great partners off and on for YEARS, with very compatible interests. SK and Earthlink jointly own Helio, and it would likely be around that partnership that Sprint would get involved (since Helio is a virtual provider off of Sprint's network anyway).

  5. Comment - Microsoft to Businesses: Forget IBM

    0.35 (Mar 16, 2006 - 5:46 PM)

At the same time, total integration isn't something that I feel is a good thing, either, with out a support and service contract, and consultants, backing it up with credentials...

If MS could have their way, it'd be 1 network, that integrates everything, and "just worked". Well, ok, it makes sense, and it's easier for people to use and manage. And when a single part of it breaks, the whole system comes grinding to a halt. At least with the "open source" 'schtick' as you call it, when my mail server crashes and burns, I can guarantee my (unrelated) database and/or web server isn't going down with it, and that people can still sign on and do their business.

Not everybody does want MS - I admit the world needs them, as a whole, but if I never used another MS product again, I'd be perfectly happy.

  6. Comment - ICANN: China Not Forming New Internet

    0.35 (Mar 2, 2006 - 5:59 PM)

Darn it! I really hoped they would split off into their own internet - my email server and inbox would thank them heavily...
