  1. Review - Psi for Windows

    0.11 Beta 2 (Apr 23, 2006)

    Well, it works.

There's not a ton of reason for it to exist though. It brings nothing new to the table that isn't already in a selection of other Win32 IM clients. And it doesn't have the clean and polished look or feel that some others do have.

For a platform like Mac it maybe has a legit place (where there aren't 4839048902345 IM all-in-oine clients already), but for Win32... meh, I'm just not impressed. It's nothing I haven't already seen in a bevy of other programs.

  2. Review - Quintessential Media Player

    Development Build 108 (Mar 1, 2006)

    Well, it finally happened.

Something finally supplanted Winamp as my default player. I've had and used QPlayer for a while now, but wasn't completely happy with a few thinsg in it (namely that output didn't SOUND right no matter how I EQ'd it). But I hung onto it and chekced in every now and again.

That's changed, QPlayer now has at least as good, if not better, output. The max memory footprint I've ever gotten it to hit is 15 Meg.

NOTE: Qplayer supports Winamp plugins. If it runs in Winamp, it runs in QPlayer (I have TomSteady going in it as we speak, just as an example). So Winamp's library of plugins isn't really any advantage...

  3. Review - IceChat

    7 Alpha Build 20051103 (Nov 3, 2005)

I dumped X-Chat some time ago after it become abundtantly-clear that it was simply losing stability with each release, and nothing more. I tried going back to mIRC but... ughh, so lacking nowadays.

Then I came across IceChat. It's not perfect, but it's stable and does so many things well, that I've stuck with it. It has some bugs (especially when editing a line you've just typed), but they're not make-or-break issues. This is now the multi-server IRC client I recommend.

  4. Review - PassMark BurnInTest Professional

    4.0 Build 1031 (Sep 13, 2005)

It's not perfect, but if you're a tech or just the resident guy who gets stuck troubleshooting other people's systems, this is one tool to always have on hand. It does what it should, and helps you narrow down what component or drivers are causing problems. Good stuff. Not the prettiest thing around, not the most-perfect, but at a file size that fits on a single floppy it's just too useful. And I always make sure the install is tossed onto any Tech CD's I put together.

  5. Review - foobar2000

    0.9 Beta 7 (Aug 29, 2005)

Inferior sound quality is a big problem here. I've never understood why Foobar sounds so poor, and why no effort has ever been made to improvement either. It's a good minimalist approach to players though, and has fairly good playlist options. If you're a stickler for sound and tone though, look elsewhere. If you just want something quick and dirty, Foobar's not a bad option compared to installing iTunes or some other monstrosity. I still think WinAmp or Quintessential Player are better overall options under Windows though.
