  1. Review - AnyDVD HD

    6.5.3.0 Beta (Mar 18, 2009)

Sorry, haters, I've been using AnyDVD for years and nothing else comes close to the convenience and elegance of this program. It does its magic in the background and it just flat-out works. I have yet to throw a working DVD at it that it didn't know how to handle. I wouldn't own a Windows machine without it. Mark it down as Essential.

  2. Review - SimplyMEPIS Linux

    6.0 (Jul 25, 2006)

I switched to SimplyMEPIS from Mandrake... err... Mandriva. After the disappointing performance from the last few Mandriva releases, I felt it was time to change distros. MEPIS works a treat! It found all my peripherals (including my nVidia GeForce 6200 -- just changed the settings to use the new nVidia drivers) and got me up and running in minutes.

Sure, there's a little learning curve going to a Debian-based distro from a Red Hat-based one, but that shouldn't be a problem for most people. Mepis is strongly based on Ubuntu (or rather Kubuntu, since Mepis uses KDE), but at least Mepis gives you an actual ROOT account.

Best part, the distro is a live disc. You can try it before you install, and you can install it from the live system. Definitely 5-stars in my book.

  3. Review - Opera for Linux

    9.0 (Jun 22, 2006)

This production release of Opera 9 is fast and rock solid; a definate improvement over the Betas. Very light on resources and memory (unlike another very good browser named after a red panda). ;-)

Tip: If Opera's "kicker" icon messes-up your system tray (SimplyMEPIS users will know what I mean), start Opera with the -notrayicon flag.

  4. Review - Opera for Windows

    9.00 Build 8501 (Jun 21, 2006)

I don't know what Chemluna, Maryk and r_soldier are talking about, Yahoo Mail works fine in Opera. Online banking thru my bank also works perfectly in Opera. My system is Linux (Mepis 6 beta 4) as well.

I've been an Opera user for many years (at least since Opera version 3), and I am quite happy with the performance, configurability and speed of this browser. I'm glad they got rid of the Widgets tab as default for the final release (I was never a fan of the Widgets). I've found Opera 9 to be very stable and will display most web pages perfectly.

Parting words: F12 is your friend. Firefox advocates need not apply, at least, not without an open mind.

  5. Comment - Up Close: The OLPC $188 laptop

    9.00 Build 8501 (Jan 10, 2008 - 3:11 PM)

*heh* I have one of these, and I think it's a pretty nifty little device. The SUGAR interface takes a little getting used to (especially if you're used to a more traditional modern platform), but for its designated role as inexpensive technology to enhance learning, it does an admirable job.

And who says it isn't sexy? I happen to like bright green!

  6. Comment - Music industry heads seriously consider the subscription model

    9.00 Build 8501 (Jan 10, 2008 - 3:01 PM)

Could you imagine if magazine subscriptions worked like a music sunscription service? As soon as your subscription lapses, all the issues of the magazines you own become unreadable. *heh* Who would want something like that?

I'm glad to see Amazon offering DRM-less, high-quality MP3 downloads. I hope they do well with it.

  7. Comment - $100 Laptop Goes on Sale for $200

    9.00 Build 8501 (Oct 29, 2007 - 8:17 PM)

Don't forget the devaluation of the U.S. Dollar in the world market over recent years. Hell, even the Canadian Dollar was stronger for a while. I'm sure that would have done something to the price... and by "something," I don't mean lower the price.

  8. Comment - Intel 'LaGrande' Chipset Ships, First Test of New vPro Trusted Platform

    9.00 Build 8501 (Aug 28, 2007 - 2:26 PM)

As long as the boards with this "feature" are clearly marked so I'll know which ones to avoid, that's fine. If *all* motherboards are eventually going to have this "feature," it'll be time to bring my Amiga 4000 out of mothballs.

  9. Comment - Sony Develops Environmentally Friendly Battery

    9.00 Build 8501 (Aug 24, 2007 - 4:27 PM)

So, if I use Nutra-Sweet to power the batteries, will I get all the volts and none of the amps, or all the amps and none of the volts?
