If MS managed it's Windows platform like Apple is managing their iPhone platform, there is no telling how the market as a whole would be different. Other operating systems may have gained more popularity; someone else may have developed a more popular OS, etc. etc.
The questions in the case of Apple's durability are these; does the average iPhone user really care anything at all about the app store approval process, and are they not finding apps that they really want or need (dealbreakers)? It has been my experience that the participants of tech-related forums represent a rather small microcosm of all the consumers of a given product and frequently the vociferous complaints don't make up enough of the market share for the tech producers to change things.
The plain and simple fact is that it's Apple's product and the can manage and distribute however they like. The consumer's choice is then to decide whether or not to buy the product under those conditions. That is the music that Apple must face; their policies impact on third party development and consumer sales.
I personally don't see Apple's sky falling at this point. IF their sky starts falling, THEN they may have to adjust their MO.

You have no earthly idea what a monopoly is do you?
I guess that means Ford has a "monopoly" on producing Expeditions.

It's funny what people will argue about. Is there someone in this forum whose life will be impacted in the least by whether or not Apple or Nokia was more profitable in the cel market for the 3rd quarter of this year? It's not going to change which phone I use.
Meanwhile, Jobs and the CEO at Nokia are pulling gobs more G's down than anyone hangin around here, myself included.
