2.7 Beta (Jan 12, 2007)
It's not terribly secure!! It took me 3 minutes to break the security with absolutely no tools.
Basically, the utility transforms folders into rootkit (hidden folders). The problem is that the content of the hidden rootkit folder can be copied to an unhidden folder just using windows commands.
1. Open registry. Look key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\HFXP2\Parameters. All hidden "rootkit" folders by Hide Folders XP are listed there with lame encryption (one caracter s***ed to the left!). So if I created an "hidden" folder named c:\coco, I will have this entry D;]dpdp]04. (The number 04 is the level of security (01=none, 02=protected, 03=hidden, 04=both)
2.Now that you know the name of the hidden folder, open cmd and type the following:
xcopy c:\coco c:\coco1 /e /h
There you go. All your files are copied, unhidden, unprotected.
I have NO programming or OS knowledge and defeated the utility easily with no tool.
Now, an utility that creates rootkits without telling it is not especially well-advised considering it is used mainly by virus and trojans. I understand the "secrecy" lies in the fact the hidden folder IS a rootkit, but this is not a very secure way to hide private data and rootkit removers may delete these precious "hidden" folders. So it's not only unsecure, but also dangerous.
Finally, asking 30$ for such tool is, IMHO, a ripp-off.
2.5.5.983 RC2 (Nov 20, 2006)
Worderful tool. Customizable. Works great. Perfect for large libaraires. Replace lot of MP3 utilities tagging, etc.
I have a licence since the program was called Songs-DB few years ago, but the freeware version is as much useful than the licenced one. Not a crippleware as some falsly claimed, but a true freeware for all basic and intermediate needs.
I love it.
1.0 Beta (Nov 7, 2006)
Nowhere it is written that this beta does not support all regions and languages. The setup interrupts because it tells me that "it does not support my region (Canada) and my language (French-Canadian)", even if wanted to use the English version!
Pretty stupid and a pretty dumb assumption that everybody that want to test the beta is as ethnocentric as the creators of the program are. I wanted to see the Capitol and the Big Apple! lol :-)
3.0.4506.30 (Nov 7, 2006)
While the idea of a common plateform for all applications is nice and have many advantages, the .NET plateform itself is a mess. It slows down the computer, if not weaken it totally, and the .Net applications are slower than other type of executables. And they are not even multilingual!
This release of .net makes not exception.
I generally discard any application that use .net. When I am really *forced* to use one, I run it then delete all traces of .Net runtime after by dumping back (with BootIt NG) on my system partition a "clean" imaged version of Windows...
I also discard new version of applications that use .Net, such as Encarta, which runs slower and is more buggy with .Net than it was with previous version.
1.51.15 Beta (Nov 1, 2006)
Just quick answers to robodesign.
1. Find support from Ztree community at http://www.ztw3.com/forum/forum.cgi?
2. Yes, Ztree is sort of multitask since you can open as many Ztree sessions as you want concurrently!
3.Support for other languages as been discussed many times and rejected by the community of users despite some of us aren't English native speakers (myself included). One reason is that Ztree being keystroke-driven and these keystrokes being mnemonic and necessarily consistant from one version to another (and from one macro to another), it wouldn't be practical to have mnemonic keystrokes that make no sense in other languages. The other reason is that most power users that use Ztree can use the English version. But this is an recurrent issue within the community and it may be adressed one day.
Ztree rocks!
