  1. Review - Rainmeter

    1.0 (Aug 10, 2009)

It's a shame that some people, by which I mean dhry, are apparently incapable of conceiving that download size does not equal actual size; anyone who had actually tried the app would have easily been able to determine that the download includes the entire VC redistributable, weighing in at some 4MB in size, and that Rainmeter itself itself is actually only just over 400k for the .exe and library (the remainder of the download is themes and addons). The only reasonable conclusion is that those users have not in fact bothered to try the tool and are just mouthing off because it's not their preferred tool. That's a shame, because while TRM is a handy little tool if all you want is a brief summary of system information, Rainmeter is far, far more flexible in what it can achieve, effectively providing a small but powerful widget engine. I'd like to see TRM display your torrent downloads on the desktop - it seems some users can't understand the convenience of this - or the weather (for which a 4MB+ download is apparently a-okay, mark you), or a planetarium, or live global event updates. Oh, and it can give you system info, if that's all you want.

Be that as it may, however, for an app that's been moribund for so long the new updates are incremental only; as Zen points out, much has changed in the meantime, and Rainmeter needs to step up and address those changes, otherwise it's never going to be anything more than a polished relic.

  2. Review - Miranda IM

    0.9.0 Alpha Build 1 (Aug 4, 2009)

    Blaxima
"Giving something a good or poor rating based solely on your preference towards a piece of software rather then the release in question is just foolish."

Rather like using a rating criteria that has nothing at all to do with the actual software, you mean? Really, if actually being able to differentiate between a beta and an RC, and why that makes a difference, is the definition of misinformed, then colour me donkey any day of the week, twice on weekends.

The developers have included a 64-bit version with the newest cycle. I can't say I'm convinced that it's really needed, but if nothing else it'll put a stop to the endless requests on the forum. There have been some teething issues, though, so no doubt another beta will be along soon, much to the chagrin of the unwashed BN masses.

  3. Review - Miranda IM

    0.8.1 (Jun 27, 2009)

I know what I'll do, I'll sign up to a site about beta releases and then complain when I get updates on beta and candidate releases because I know nothing about development cycles. Yes, that won't make me look foolish in the slightest.

Miranda still does the job better than its competitors. The steps that have been taken thus far to attempt to improve on its user-friendliness have not been wholly successful, but on the whole it's still Smaller (well, relative to the alternatives) and Faster. There aren't many apps out there that pack so much into a 1.5MB download.

  4. Review - REAPER for Windows (x86)

    1.830 (Mar 25, 2007)

Damn Lawrence, you found them out, software authors really do have nothing better to do than make sure they're up on Betanews every other day!

  5. Review - Miranda IM

    0.6 Test Build 16 (Oct 31, 2006)

Metshrine: I clearly do know what a review is, being a critical appraisal of a product as a whole; you on the other hand seem to think a review is limited to solely how one niggling bug affects you, and hang whatever else might conceivably be taken into account. Moreover you don't seem to understand the meaning of hypocrisy, since I clearly did rate the program - or did you miss the bar o' 5 that accompanied my comment?

I can only presume that you actually meant "review" and not "rate", in which case I'd point out that I've already amply expressed my opinion of the program elsewhere in these reviews, I use it on a daily basis and despite the faults that do exist consider it far better than the alternatives that are currently available - that is why I gave it a 5.

Now you tell me, are you reviewing the program, or are you reviewing the bug? Because if you're doing the former your comments and rating don't gel, and if you're doing the latter your "review" belongs on the bugtracker, not here.

  6. Comment - Microsoft Pushes Copy Protection with Windows Media

    0.6 Test Build 16 (Jan 22, 2003 - 2:50 PM)

And it's even more reasonable to say that anyone putting this sort of encoding on their CD automatically makes it a top-priority target for just this sort of thing. People will do it for no other reason than to p*ss the companies off for trying it.

  7. Comment - AOL Replaces IE with Netscape in New Beta

    0.6 Test Build 16 (Mar 15, 2002 - 9:00 AM)

And the moral of this story is: if you write compatible code in the first place then you're not set up for a fall later on.

  8. Comment - K-Meleon Browser Showcases Gecko

    0.6 Test Build 16 (Aug 23, 2000 - 2:09 AM)

I think you just underlined exactly why K-Meleon is a better choice than the rest of 'em. If I want an e-mail client or html editor I'll use an e-mail client or html editor.
