  1. Review - DVDFab HD Decrypter

    5.0.7.6 (Jul 30, 2008)

I just use it for ripping my DVD collection to the hard drive of my HTPC before using Handbrake to convert it into a H264 mkv file for Vista Media Center and it does the job like a champ.

I haven't tried using any of it's other functions so I haven't encountered any of the nag screens that others lament.

For DVD decryption and ripping the content to a drive, this is the best application I've encountered, and the fact that the functionality is free is just gravy. It's been stable and hasn't crashed a single time and does the job I need it to do. So I'm giving it a 5.

  2. Review - PeaZip for Windows

    1.11 (Jan 28, 2008)

Works great for a while and then suddenly stops bringing up the gui when opening zip files despite launching the process. Which means I need to go into task manager and manually terminate the process. Then I need to uninstall and re-install the software for it to work properly again - until it breaks the same way.

Despite looking pretty, it's not worth that annoyance.

  3. Review - Ubuntu

    8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) Alpha 3 (Jan 11, 2008)

Installing Xen makes the NVidai driver stop working and I can't get any resolution higher than 640x480.

Without Xen, there is no point having a shiny linux OS since I play so many games on my computer.

Gave it a 4 for the speed and stability and eye candy. Get a decent emulator going (like Xen) perfectly on the OS and I'll give it a 5.

  4. Review - Wine

    0.9.51 (Dec 17, 2007)

I have a similar setup as sjc in running Mandriva as my main OS and an nLited XP install for games.

Cadega is so not worth it since it's probably cheaper and less of a headache to just buy a copy of XP in the long run.

Gave it a 4 rating because the Wine group is contributing to the ReactOS folks which I think will support games better than Wine in the future.

  5. Review - Skype for Linux

    2.0.0.27 Beta (Dec 6, 2007)

Ugh, it sucks more bandwitdh than any of the SIP based Voip providers - probably because it operates on a p2p model.

Grab yourself one of the SIP based phones and ditch the proprietary Skype already.

  6. Comment - Senate antitrust chief demands answers on US text messaging prices

    2.0.0.27 Beta (Sep 12, 2008 - 4:14 PM)

Sounds like someone just got their kid's phone bill...

  7. Comment - Where does Sarah Palin stand on technology issues?

    2.0.0.27 Beta (Sep 8, 2008 - 4:28 PM)

You're either lying to yourself or being disingenuous. We both know that science class is where they're trying to 'teach both'.

I've had enough run-ins with their kind to know how they view it as their duty to lie for jesus.

    2.0.0.27 Beta (Sep 8, 2008 - 9:33 AM)

I didn't realize there were two sides to science that needed to be taught.

Actually on further thought, there isn't. Since creationism doesn't follow the scientific method of disproving testable hypotheses to refine and retest new ones, there isn't anything in creationism that needs to be taught in schools other than that it isn't science and shouldn't be in science class.

They can stick it in comparative religion along with Ymir the frost giant and Pangu and the egg.

The people who spout 'teach both' are merely creationists who've learned to lie or too dim to distinguish between science and myth and is just as damning of someone's character, especially for a position of leadership.

So no, it may not be fanatical, but it does indicate that they're lying or too stupid to know what science is and what belongs in science class.

I pretty much agree with the rest though.

  9. Comment - Where does John McCain stand on technology issues?

    2.0.0.27 Beta (Sep 5, 2008 - 12:26 PM)

I think the -ism you're looking for to describe that is libertarianism, not conservatism. So I doubt I'm really confusing it.

And yes, I am also alarmed at the burgeoning religious left and Obama promising them that he will be expanding Bush's faith based initiatives.

Only unheard of in the last few years. Besides, conservatives suffer from some amount of cognitive dissonance; believing limited government is good for economic issues but not for social ones. The free-market is great for corporations, but not so good that they need to force creationism into schools or pass laws to ban abortion or prevent gays from getting married.

I would be a lot more sympathetic to their ideals of limited government if it applied to more than economics and if they didn't have a quite scary base of the party that pushes the whole America is a christian nation nonsense and wants to teach school kids that Adam and Eve frolicked around Eden with the dinosaurs. Unfortunately those last two items are deal breakers.
