  1. Review - Linux Kernel

    2.6.23-rc5 (Sep 4, 2007)

Do NOT use this release candidate. There's a bug in net that results in an oops after several hours usage. It's fixed in git1.

  2. Review - Tor for Windows

    0.2.0.4 Alpha (Aug 11, 2007)

It's a great tool. Providing some nice network noise for those honourable dissidents and activists, that's a satisfying feeling.

  3. Review - GNOME

    2.19.6 (Aug 2, 2007)

    It's beautiful. It's elegant.

But it's so damned restrictive. And bloated. Major refactoring needed. Xfce can do it, why can't Gnome?

  4. Review - 7-Zip (32-bit)

    4.50 Beta (Jul 24, 2007)

    It's light, it's intuitive and it's functional.

The GUI does have a couple of quirks, for instance: the toolbars have an unneeded useless function of moving the right part of the toolbar to the right, and the menu isn't skinned by the Windows theming service. Other than that, the GUI is more or less perfect: simple, intuitive, functional and neat.

What I do wish is that the command line switches be given documentation. I have searched, but it appears that there is none.

  5. Review - Linux Kernel

    2.6.22-rc7 (Jul 3, 2007)

SLUB really (really) improves performance on my Core 2 Quad. I should think anyone with an SMP or NUMA system will see the difference. Just remember to disable SLUB debugging for some extra "juice" ;)

I missed them saying it wasn't "socialistic", where exactly was this?

  7. Comment - D-Link, Netgear team up with BitTorrent

    The game:
Spotting straight from Press Release department to news website "news".

    How to play:
Multiply loaded buzz words by number of occurrances per paragraph.

  8. Comment - Apple rolls out double-quad-core Mac Pro, Xserve

    2.6.22-rc7 (Jan 8, 2008 - 12:49 PM)

You could use it for a local file server.

  9. Comment - US ranks poorly as global privacy situation worsens

    2.6.22-rc7 (Jan 2, 2008 - 6:23 PM)

I was going to say, they can't be worse than Airstrip One itself.

I am surprised that Finland falls so low in the analysis. I guess I'll be moving to Canada instead then?

  10. Comment - How much open source software are businesses really using?

Never attribute to stupidity that which can be adequately explained by humour. ...Messageboard's razor.
