I've had a TiVo since 2004. Although to be honest I haven't personally used it since December 2007 when I got an HD DVR from my cable company to go with my new HDTV. I let a friend of mine use it until a couple weeks ago when he also upgraded to an HD DVR from his cable company. Now I am letting my folks use it.
TiVo competes by making a better product. While I've gotten used to the cable DVR I have, it's not as easy to use or as powerful (software wise) as the TiVo. But you're right in saying that TiVo is in trouble. Having the best product only goes so far, and TiVo requires a large up front payment that you don't have to worry about from the cable company.
I'd love to have an HD TiVo, but the $500 for one with lifetime service is just too steep. Especially when I'd still have to rent a cable card from the cable company.

With In-Store pickup, you can get the website price, AND get it right away. That's the best way to get around the deceptive practice, just buy it online and pick it up at the store.

Not every state has sales tax. Beyond that, an out of state company that doesn't have a land presence in a state does not have to collect sales taxes for that state.
Amazon, for instance, is headquartered in Seattle, Washington. Anyone that orders from them in the state of Washington has to pay sales tax. But if you live in California, then you don't.

This isn't really new, Yahoo used to have an browser based version of Messenger, but got rid of it. This is more of a relaunch than a debut. The older version was java based I believe.
It does look like they're pushing it over the stand alone client.

No, it means they wouldn't make the processors themselves, instead buying them from IBM or someone else who would continue to make the processor.
