  1. Comment - Copyright board leaves rates unchanged, iTunes lives for another day

To "Songwriter" -- come on, the traditional model is dead. Between iTunes and piracy (both of which you can never kill), does this really matter?

It's nice to know that a lot of bands out there are going down a more independent road and taking control. Take Radiohead for example, a band that basically sold their latest album themselves, then went to the record label and said "this is how we want to sell it, we already made some money by doing it ourselves".

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, but your wages are going to continue to decrease regardless, because the music industry as we knew it pre-Napster is pretty much dead. Hopefully, someday, artists/bands will continue to create their own little labels that can put people such as yourself to work to make a decent wage again. I think once some kind of trend catches on, you'll be able to help those people.

Remember: You no longer need a mainstream radio station, MTV, VH1, and music magazines to make it big. They help, but the Internet has changed and continues to change everything. I think eventually you will see the RIAA as a relic, and people such as yourself will figure out a way to stick around. The music industry is in the middle of a transition that nobody wants to talk about because the recording industry wants to dictate the language. They're going to go down in history as one of the biggest party poopers in the history of the Internet. Someday when they're dead and artists are independently distributing their content, many of them will still need songwriters like you. That won't change. Kill the dinosaur if you want to make money again.
