  1. Comment - Microsoft: Please Don't Disable UAC

    (Jun 28, 2006 - 11:14 AM)

"An average user will install or ungrade an app what, once a month, if even that?"

Well, I guess it all depends on the applications this normal user uses, really...

For example, my wife, who is very normal user :), plays World of Warcraft. The game actually patches itself every tuesday, so just there, we have 4 interventions.

I'm not saying it's a lot, though. It's just that since the internet is becoming more accessible, and that applications are being more *aware* of this situation, system or application modifications are more frequent.

More and more programs have some type of checkbox/option for "Check for updates" now.

    [Edit]
PS. You're right though as far not removing the UAC. I'd probably not even tell anyone in the family that the feature can be deactivated just to be sure the system stays "clean"

  2. Comment - Novell Ousts CEO, CFO in Shakeup

    Totally off-topic :-)

"Around Microsoft does not the world turn."

I always enjoy those Yoda-type phrases.

You'd think that for living over 600yrs and many of them amongst english-speaking human beings, he would have learned to speak the english language in a normal way ;)

  3. Comment - Dutch Court Rules MP3 Linking Illegal

    (Jun 19, 2006 - 3:50 PM)

From what I understood of PC_Tool's comment, is that he was just explaining the difference between theft and IP violation as being (as described from the victim's point of view):

Theft : Loss of material (something physically tangible)

IP violation : Loss of possible revenue

Like he said, he was not *defending* it, just explaining that there was a difference.

    Just saying...

  4. Comment - Report: DSL to Overtake Cable Internet

    (Jun 19, 2006 - 3:01 PM)

I guess it depends on the region where you live.

Up here in Qc, Canada, cable (Videotron) has MUCH more traction than DSL has (Bell).

DSL is trying to play catchup with cable here, and as soon as they come close to matching in performance, cable just ups our speed and gives us a bit more.

For now, this competition has been good for the consumer as the prices have not been going up (in a substantial amount anyway). We're being given more for roughly the same price.

Hope it stays like that-- even better if it would put prices lower too ;-)

  5. Comment - Vista Torrent Offline After Legal Threat

    (Jun 16, 2006 - 10:19 AM)

You know, if there are so much people downloading the beta, and even more people *hoping* to get the beta, the publicity is not as negative as you seem to think.

I just don't see why you want Microsoft to do things like *you* want them to.

Apparently, they are not ready for this torrent alternative and want to go about this the more traditionnal way. So what? It's not like the current beta user base is too low and that they won't be getting enough user feedback !? Heck, they could have closed the beta right then, but instead, they are still offering DVDs to people who are ready to wait.

I *do* find that Microsoft is a slow learner when it comes to community needs, but I still appreciate the fact that they've been working hard on changing that facet of the company in the past year which is indeed nice. Maybe they'll be offering the torrent alternative on the next round of betas. Longhorn server maybe?

    PS:
Calling people names just because they are defending their points isn't giving credibility to what you're saying. It doesn't make you look smart; it just makes you look bitter -nothing more. V
