  1. Review - Real Alternative Regular

    1.23 (May 20, 2004)

WMP 6.1 is the default installed player for Win 98. Need to update to 6.4 via oldversion dot com. Don't forget the security updates for 6.4 at Windows update site. Both WMP 6.4 and Media Player Classic can be set to repeat forever via options and I never had an issue with repeating on either.

  2. Review - QuickTime Alternative (QT7)

    1.31 (Feb 21, 2004)

Point 1: QuickTime Alternative is still quite large. Point 2: One could use QT 2.1.2, 3, 4 or 5 to play MOV files. Most sites offer choices now for movie trailer file types. MP4 necessity is up to individual user(and I thinks version 5 can handle them). Point 3: See Point 2 or, like you said, turn it off. Point 4: Point taken. Point 5: Point taken. As for Real Player, one could possibly use Real Player 5, G2, 7 or 8 to play the files that Real Alternative is limited to. Versions 5 to 7 are less the size of Real Alternative, with version 8 Basic being equal. Also, an expiry-free, spyware-free and nuisance-free version of RealOne V2 is available courtesy of the BBC. I will now give QT Alt. three stars due to agreeing with 2 of your points.

  3. Review - Mozilla Firefox for Windows (v2)

    0.8 (Feb 9, 2004)

bobad, nemrtvy's attack was uncalled for. But your reply was blind as well and cliched to boot... Note "pretty useless for anyone with a life". Find a dictionary and increase your vocabulary. Don't go thru "life" being a sheep. The faults that you find with Mozilla lead me to believe that a) your PC is amiss, and/or b) your PC/software knowledge is lacking. I find not the problems with Mozilla that you so state. If you want flawless software, why are you hanging around here at BETAnews?

  4. Review - Adobe Flash Player for Windows

    7.0.19.0 (Dec 17, 2003)

They oughta call it nagware. All flash seems to be used for now is ads and long download(on 56K) page intros. woohoo. Lucky me. I'm so excited and I just can't hide it.

  5. Review - Opera for Windows

    7.23 Final (Nov 22, 2003)

Page rendering problem was fixed. However, it can crash (quite often sometimes) when trying to close a page that is still loading. Stopping the page from loading then closing the window stops most crashes, but will still do so on occasion. Depends if another open window is loading. Will also crash occasionally if I change the address manually in the address bar to go to a different page on the same site (haven't tried going to a completely different site to see if it still crashes). Again, it all depends on page loading either in that window or other windows. Upon restart, if I try to change the address manually again, it will repeat the crash.

  6. Comment - ICQ Slims Down for 4.0 Release

    7.23 Final (Apr 20, 2004 - 4:04 PM)

I dumped ICQ a while back once I disabled DCOM via registry... (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE..."EnableDCOM"="N"). DCOM is a security risk (and resource hog). ICQ demands that it be on. All the other IM's don't complain about it being off.

  7. Comment - Microsoft Granted Java Reprieve

    7.23 Final (Jun 27, 2003 - 2:17 AM)

    Read the artical more closely.

    Quote:
"The case will now return to the lower court for further proceedings under Motz unless Sun and Microsoft reach a settlement."

    Can you say litigation?

    I knew you could.

This will go on for quite some time.

  8. Comment - Microsoft: Upgrade Your Media Player

    7.23 Final (May 30, 2001 - 8:28 AM)

WMP 7.1 allows for ad streaming. Who wants that. I think M$ is just tricking people to upgrade to allow for ad streaming. The more people using 7.1 or higher, the more advertisers M$ can sign up. Just uncheck "Allow Internet sites to uniquely identify your player" in Tools/Options.
