The sidebar does hide and can even be completely closed. Its not a requirement of Vista- and like most widgets, its mostly aimed for taky crap people tend to enjoy messing with. Personally I don't- so I keep it turned off. You just can't even start to 'diss' an optional feature of an OS- thats ludicrous.

You think because an exploit is around, that everyone is going to be effected and the world of windows will collapse in a day. The funny thing is more how many holes in OS X are just waiting to be found or published when people actually start to give a SHT about OS X.

Seriously, do you practice stupidity, I've been around on the net a long time, I've seen people ask where to download video cards, cut parts off hardware so it fits and much more.
