  1. Review - Google Chrome for Windows

    4.0.249.0 Beta (Nov 17, 2009)

Gotta say, it's really grown on me especially now that there are extensions, I've currently got mouse gesture, adblock, flashblock, smoothscroll and status bar clock.
With just these limited extensions it seems faster than the equivalent Firefox with the same kind of addons, especially when it comes to start up times.
That said there are still a few annoying things such as not being able to use those extensions in incongnito mode and popups are always in normal mode even if the parent window was incognito.
I'm conflicted, i'm still in love with Opera but both Firefox and Chrome are starting to eat away at the functionality that Opera provides out of the box via extensions etc. None of them quite approach Opera in terms of usability though. But still... that day of reckoning is drawing close I fear.....

  2. Review - Sumatra PDF

    1.0 (Nov 17, 2009)

Got to agree with Diam0nd on this one. The memory does skyrocket. That said it is rather snappy. But the memory usage really does make me down rate this. It's promising but has a way to go yet.

  3. Review - Logitech SetPoint (32-bit)

    4.80 (Nov 17, 2009)

"Upgraded" from 4.70 to 4.80. Now it doesn't work anymore. Surprise!
Logitech may make a fantastic mouse, but they couldn't write software to save their lives. I rank this with Adobe Reader. Complete over-sized pile of excrement.

  4. Review - Safari for Windows

    4.0.4 (5.31.21.10) (Nov 13, 2009)

Wow, i really didn't expect this to be so bad on a PC. I've tried it on a Mac and it seems OK.
Performance is abysmal despite all the benchmarks i see on the net. It really is slow. Start up time on my computer is of the order of about 15 seconds, in other words even slower than firefox *with* over a dozen addons.
The top sites "quick dial" type feature doesn't keep all the sites i add despite "pinning" them and they take an age to show up when you open a new tab.
Font's are badly displayed and like trying to read underwater (i tried my best with the font smoothing settings but nothing was decent)
Last but not least (not just for PC but for Mac as well) it it super Uncustomisable, absolutely completely the opposite of Firefox or Opera. You can drag a few buttons around on the toolbar and that's about it. You can't get rid of the search box. You can have it Steve Job's way or you can shove it basically!
Add on top of that it's the worst browser for security (though i think that was possibly for Mac and not PC).
Oh and guess what? it keeps me logged into FileForum across browser restarts. So that means it's not clearing down cookies. But wait, can i make it discard cookies on exiting? Nope. No wonder it's a security nightmare.
Ironically on a PC even IE8 is better than this steaming turd. The only reason i waste hard drive space on this is because i need it for testing. For the love of god somebody kill this horrible creation.

  5. Review - Opera for Windows (Beta)

    10.10 Build 1874 Beta (Nov 13, 2009)

This is actually an RC. You can read about it in the Opera Desktop Team blog. On there it also warns that because this is an RC it does NOT install separately.
Phat Esther, stop sitting on your keyboard. You don't make any sense.

  6. Comment - Earth to Europe: You won. Microsoft complied. Live with it.

    10.10 Build 1874 Beta (Jun 15, 2009 - 9:57 AM)

That's all very well provided the rules are reasonable. As far as i can see there is one punitive rule for Microsoft and another for everybody else. If Opera and Mozilla or Google want to have their browser installed then it is up to them to convince users that they should go and download and install. As for Opera, if they just got their damn act together with regards to advertising they'd have more of a presence on the desktop rather than having to whinge and moan like they are now.
And no, i'm not from the US. I'm from the UK where the overbearing pencil knecks in Brussels cast a long shadow. And i'm writing this on Opera 10 Beta. Just to pre-empt your "you MS shill" comments as well!

  7. Comment - Earth to Europe: You won. Microsoft complied. Live with it.

    10.10 Build 1874 Beta (Jun 15, 2009 - 8:10 AM)

It's about time the EU bureaucrats butt out of this stuff. They stick their oar in at every conceivable opportunity. Be it weights and measures, working hours, shape of bananas (i kid you not).
I would LMAO if Microsoft just said, right we're gonna bin it. If people want Windows 7 they can order it in the post from a US company. I'm sure we'd see the EU paper pushers scrambling to mend the fences, especially with all the lost tax revenue that keeps their gravy train going.
    Death to the EU.

  8. Comment - Opera to launch 'Turbo' for faster Web browsing

    10.10 Build 1874 Beta (Feb 17, 2009 - 9:55 AM)

    Sturgess,
"That's the b**** about Opera if used when insulting folk, it has no spell-checker, and you it would appear need one."
Pity Firefox doesn't have a grammar checker. It would appear you need one. Just sayin'....

  9. Comment - First public beta of Opera 9.6: Chrome is on their mind, too

    10.10 Build 1874 Beta (Sep 11, 2008 - 2:56 AM)

Talking of bringing the A-game. How about BetaNews sort out the facts. Tab dragging to an external window has been available since god know when and the "new" search feature has also been available for a long while. Bascially this article is old news except for the 85/100 Acid 3 rendering. This is rubbish article is just as result of laziness on behalf of BetaNews.
