   Review - Media Player Classic for Windows 98/Me

   6.4.9.1 Build 20081005 (Aug 23, 2009)

   The only thing I wish I could see this player contain would be a nice library interface like what MediaMonkey or WinAmp has. Otherwise, this player is excellent. Plays everything I throw at it, minimal memory footprint, and solid. Its not pretty, but works perfect.

   I am a PC user, but own an iphone. Itunes is ok for what it does. However, due to its proprietary nature, its leaves anyone more than a novice needing more. Yeah its free, and it will do the job, but there's many other tools out there that can manage your ipod/iphone much better. I personally use mediamonkey. There's many others, that will probably be mentioned. I wouldnt stick with itunes unless you're on a mac.

   Dont down rate the software because of a bad interaction with the company on a purchase. I use MM for managing all my music, and to sync with my iphone. It works great. There's a few things that I would do differently, however, that's just a matter of personal preference, not a failing of the program. I migrated from Jriver MediaCenter to this. MM isnt much of a player, like MC is. But on the music management side, its very good.

   If you took hirens, and substituted it with freeware and GPL software, you would have ubcd.
   
   I use this at work constantly. Very easy to dump to a thumb drive and away you go. A bit of a learning curve to customize it. But out of the box, it can fix most problems that one would come across.

   This is my main AV, and has been for a couple of years. If you turn on all the protection, it does bog your system down a bit. But I usually leave it at the middle of the road setting, and it works just fine. However, make sure that you turn the audio notifications off, or you will hear "Your antivirus has been updated" at 5 AM. It kinda freaked me about a bit. Great product tho. And well featured for it being free.

   Yes, if Mac is on top, there will be more focus to exploiting it, however, due to the way that the mac os is designed (tis unix after all), there is less of a threat than there is in XP/Vista/2k. Unix by its design is much more secure than windows. Been working in both environments for about 10 years, and I cant remember ever having to clean a virus or malware from a linux box or a mac system...ever. Windows...at least a few times a week. Maybe unix/mac users are a bit more savvy not to click on the banner offering them free sex at 3am...but I would put my money on the OS. If MS used a unix kernel on win 7, then they might have a winner. It worked for mac. Unless you were a mac fanboy from years past, the macos got solid once it was based on bsd. I truly hated the macos until it hit osx.

   Have you ever used Vista? Or even better...have you had to support 200+ workstations? We do not want Vista in there at all. Why? Because its not about "moving on"...its about being able to keep business as usual. Vista is inferior to XP in the business arena, and in the business world, as I am sure you are aware, is about money. Personal users want to "move on" then thats fine. But in the business world, you cant just "move on". Because in "moving on" it could involve hundreds of man hours, and not to mention, tons of money having to replace hardware and software that is in the business world that wont work in vista. Try getting a job in IT schmuck and you will see that the world doesnt revolve around you...it revolves around whats best for the users and the company. If we upgrade to Vista...we HAVE to upgrade all of the hardware. Suddenly, the cost has tripled, the time investment has tripled...just to install an OS that isnt ready for prime time.

   I, for one, will miss winamp. Until recently (started to use media center from jriver) its been my only media player. I remember dumping winplay (circa 1997) and going to winamp and never looked back. However, media center came to v. 10 and it just kicked ass. So winamp, old friend, you will be missed.

10. Comment - Microsoft Reissues DirectX 9 Update

    I am glad to see that this update came out. I have an ATI AIW 7500. I had just reinstalled Windows 2000 and decided to install DX9 and the newest catalyst drivers. After that, my TV capture would not work. I always leave contacting support as the last result, but after I tried everything I could think of, I emailed ATI, and got the lamest canned response that I have ever seen. It was just a set of links to their basic installation. I even took the time to email them my whole sysinfo about my box and all the details. No wonder end users lose their minds, you have to be quite skilled with PC's to be able to solve half the problems that arise. Since tech support for most of these companies are a joke. I can say that since I work in tech support. Heheh...
