  1. Comment - Is Apple making overall headway with the iPhone 3G?

    @Hollywood

    To be honest, I live in Ohio and they're still generating huge lines for the iPhone. So I don't really doubt what internetworld7 was saying... although, you can tell he's a huge fanboy. That aside, I picked up an iphone a couple weeks ago and I'm impressed. If you live in central ohio, you get fantastic service with 3G speeds at about 780kbs. The highest I have seen is 1200kbs and the lowest 348kbs. I'm overall, satisfied with my purchase. I wouldn't worry too much about porting your software over. For now, its the closest thing to a true pocket PC.

    I've noticed a lot of people complaining about how they don't have 3G as though that's Apple's problem. Also, I saw a post about how India has to pay so much more for the phone. What you guys are failing to understand is that you're buying a phone. With that phone you get a service plan from a service provider. For USA, its AT&T. AT&T is subsidizing the iPhone's cost which is why I paid $300 for my 16gig instead of the $599 they were charging a few months ago.

    The first generation iphone was a profit share between Apple and AT&T. Apple got a cut of the monthly AT&T service plans. That is no longer the deal. AT&T pays the $300 to Apple and I get a cheaper phone but a more expensive service plan.

    With all that said. 3G is only as good as your service provider. So if your 3G service sucks in your area, then you're not going to get the speeds that are advertised. There is no breech of contract or misleading ads. You just didn't do your research before you bought the phone. How many of you look to make sure you have service before you buy into a cellphone company? The same rules apply when you're buying a smart phone. You need to make sure you have the reception in the areas that you frequent or it will be worthless to you.
