If anyone here is actually running 2k SP3, I'd like to know if there is any truth to the rummor that this service pack will sneak in the "Activation" crap like with XP products?
BTW, I ran XP PRO RC2 and I happily went back to Win 2K SP2. It's the first time, for me, that going "backwards" in Windows was a relief and welcomed change. XP is not more stable, it's not more this and that, it's eye candy. Win 2k is still the most stable, most supported OS from the clowns at Microsoft. For those of you run XP or plan to, it will be a driver nightmare, just like 2K was in it's inception. Who the hell wants to go through that again? Newbies and people who have no real use for a PC other than surfing porn and Microsoft's website. Get real and stay real. XP is unsupported and will remain like that for at least a year or so. Older systems, new products are already supported in Win 98-2000, why waste your time with more unsupported Microsoft crap and "beta" drivers? It's all just a big mistake.

OK, I got it working.
One point in favor of XP is the fact that I am able to run the video card (Geforce 2 MX - 32mb) at a much higher level or quality.
1024 X 768
Color Depth: 32 bit
Tex Detail: Full
Tex Qual: 32 bit
Bilinear
Using Win 98 or 2000 on the same system and card, the max without video lag complications, the system could only be set at 16 bit and 800 X 600. This is a great improvement in performance with XP. Even I'm impressed.

Adding any other barriers (WPA), other than money to using XP, will only hurt consumer relations and sales both for Microsoft and for the PC industry. You create MORE piracy, when they make it harder for honest people to use their products, not less.
Asking for repeat permission, to use a licensed copy of XP or any other WPA product is far beyond logical. Using a crack to turn off the WPA, to me, would be smarter in every aspect.
My prediction is, a massive problem will develop in the future with WPA and Microsoft themselves, will issue a patch, which I am sure they already have in place, to deactivate the WPA, "legally" for every consumer.
Rather than wait, just scrap the stupid WPA idea and spend more time of making Windows work better and for less money and see piracy reduction.

darksaber:
What video card are you using to be able to Quake on XP?
I'm using the Geforce 2 MX with the Nvidia 12.41 drivers for 2000. The game starts up, but then it locks up, the same type of lock up when you try to get a server list and your net connection is out. Click, click, click... crash.
Any tips?

FunkyFred: Like I said the crashes or some of them were due to trying to run Quake 3. I've reset the sytem to not "auto-boot", but that was the default setting. Now it will just do it's usual "lock-unlock" then back to the desktop.
Many other crashes came about when I removed a 128 mb strip of Ram (reducing the system from 512 to 384) upon re-boot, it was one crash sceen after another. There was easily eight or nine in a row, till it stopped. These are the reasons for my system crash.
As far as general stability, it is stable, don't get me wrong. Also all the driver are "right out of the box". In otherwards, I've not had to install any drivers outside of what came with XP.
