I think you're a little confused at how phone subsidies work. Phone carriers purchase new Motorola, LG, Samsung, etc. phones at full price from the manufacturers (iPhone included). Phone carriers purchase those phones, and then sell them to new subscribers "at a discount". Knock off a few hundred bucks, and get you to lock into an $80 per month contract * 24 months (that's about $2,000). This is just to attract new customers, and it's going to happen.
