RC2 Build 5744 (Oct 7, 2006)
There are still a lot of applications that don't work correctly with Vista, namely Nero version 7 and some games. But a lot of others commonly used apps work fine. The performance is fairly snappy the user interface is ok. Everything has been moved for settings so be prepared to visit the control panel often.
As for the quality I would say its good. Vista is stable I haven't had any problems with it crashing with 5728 so we will see what 5744 has in store.

Between netflix unlimited streaming and still getting one dvd at a time by mail, all for 9 dollars a month I think blockbuster is dead. As soon as the rest of the U.S. catches on to streaming, with roku, ps3, xbox 360, tivo and home theatre pc's. It's widely accessible now, 3 devices in my home theatre support it now, I have a hard time choosing which one to use. The variety is always expanding, its pretty crazy. Ps3 is the best so far. Fear the netflix.
I haven't rented a movie from Blockbsuter in at least a year and a half. The store down the street even closed. RIP Blockbuster, your grave is dug and ready for burial right next to comp usa and Circuit city. When's the funeral, I predict June 2010 or 2011.

One thing about Microsoft is they have the money, the time and the motivation to keep on going. They also have nothing to lose. Unlike creative and all the other companies in this arena Microsoft has their cash cows to live off of and fund this project.
If anything, I think its great they are here, they are providing the competition needed to keep the leader innovating. I have a feeling we will be seeing ipods, iphones and touches with oled screens. You have to admit that is one thing that is just beautiful about the new Zune HD. I don't see the value however in music subscriptions, even with 10 songs free. I really don't buy that much music. That is a great way to get a constant revenue stream though, 15 dollars a month in a year adds up to a lot. Really how much music can you listen to that you don't already have? And who has enough time to figure it out? Pandora is free, and that is a great way to introduce you to some new music without the money, time and hassle. Apple has hte market in lock down, just like windows does the desktop pc os. Just the way it is.

One of the reasons firefox is enjoying such great market share is thanks to it being on so many platforms. Linux, mac os x, windows etc. So the fact chrome is 2.6 percent on windows alone is pretty impressive in such a short period of time. The power of google is proof right there. The chrome os, the thing isn't even out but just the idea spurred and insane amount of news and debate. No other company gets that kind of press, for essentially nothing. Amazing.

While I can certainly understand frustration with an outage of service, no matter how small. Google has to be extremely embarrassed by this and I have no doubt this exact type of issue will never happen again.
Keep in mind though gmail was built, engineered and designed from the ground up, by google. Its unique and when something goes wrong, they have to figure it out. They don't call someone up for tech support or something.
Point is, the fact it works, and works extremely well is amazing. The person who wrote this talked about the outage a year ago. Not last week or last month, a year ago. And this was an issue taht was unique. When your redudnancy/fail over system fails, and it cascades.
I can't even imagine how huge their gmail infastructure is. This company hosts 36 million email accounts on 10's of thousands or more servers. Yeah thats amazing it works with almost no down time. 99.99 percent uptime is a little less then 1 hour per year. What do you think the average in house uptime is? Not that. I am sure a little slack would be appreciated, instead of the losing my mind you google is horrible for 100 minutes of outage attitude.

You act like you learned who your readers were, after posting that last article. This website is called betanews.com eh, do you think my grandma (whos is dead) might read this site?
Come on now, even looking at the title someone who is interested in the latest and greatest cutting edge stuff will most likely be interested. Windows 7 being a great example. So why would you think to post an article, ripping on the latest and greatest os by microsoft? And how you shouldn't update to it. That last article obviously and ill repeat was meant to do nothing more then create as you put it "Behive of activity" what did you think was going to happen?
Gee I thought this was some media general news site where common users and folks come to read. Oh wait. Read the url.
