  1. Review - Network File Monitor Professional

    2.32.5 (Feb 20, 2009)

While it works as advertised, I do not feel the price is worth more than I paid for my Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit license.

For function I would give it a 5. For price, I knock that down to 3

  2. Review - ZoneAlarm Extreme Security

    8.0.283.000 Beta (Feb 2, 2009)

While it seems Checkpoint is finally trying to support Vista x64 with this release it is only in 32-bit compatibility-mode. IMHO security programs of this level running on a 64-bit OS must be 64-bit apps themselves rather than a half-assed port.

Until Checkpoint gets with the program they will never get more than 3 stars from me.

  3. Review - Free Download Manager

    2.6.796 Beta (Aug 24, 2008)

I will only give it a 3 since it is not officially supporting 64-bit Vista. I can see no overriding reason it should not but until it does it will continue to get a mediocre rating from me regardless of its features.

  4. Review - jZip

    1.2.0.42544 Beta (Jan 11, 2008)

Does not properly integrate with Vista x64 shell & context menus. Nor did it create a start menu icon on Vista x64.

Not too useful to me if it does not do these things. With the growing popularity of 64-bit Windows, if a program cannot do these things, it loses a lot of value.

    Needs more work.

  5. Review - OpenOffice.org for Windows

    2.2.0 (Mar 28, 2007)

Excellent software - particularly for the price. In the multi-platform world, kicks MS Office's booty.

    @minc3d

It is apparent you have a problem with OpenOffice's preloader. The main reason others can't match MS Office's load times under Windows is because much of MS Office's time-critical portions are preloaded with Windows itself. Developers of non-Microsoft apps like OpenOffice simply do not have the "inside track" advantage of MS Office use of proprietary Windows APIs and components. Particularly if they want to maintain multi-platform support. Try running MS Office on Linux (under Wine) and you will see the situation reversing when MS Office does not have this unfair competitive advantage in a non-Microsoft operating system.

With the mix of MS Office document compatability, multiplatform support and price (uh, free), you can't beat OpenOffice with a stick.

  6. Comment - Microsoft: No free Win7 yet, but the option is left open

    2.2.0 (Feb 13, 2009 - 11:21 AM)

I have already bought a bunch of Vista licenses in both 32 and 64 bit at considerable cost. If there is no free, or very cheap upgrade path, my upgrade to Windows 7 won't be for at least 2 years. I just can't justify a further large cash outlay just to upgrade.

However if the cost is minimal, I would be right there in the front of the upgrade line.

  7. Comment - 22% of Windows Installs Non-Genuine

    2.2.0 (Jan 23, 2007 - 4:36 PM)

WGA has a very poor batting average of detecting truly 'illegal' windows installs. I have heard so many LEGAL OEM windows users get poop-pooed by this bogus WGA system. Yeah, considering how many OEM systems there are out there, I would take this claim with a pound of salt.

  8. Comment - Microsoft to Strike Passwords from URLs in IE

    2.2.0 (Feb 4, 2004 - 12:21 PM)

Why you ask? Because it's there. Joe sixpack doesnt give a hoot about mozilla, opera, Firebird, or the IE 'Shells' like Avant or MyIE2.

All they care about is that they can click on an internet shortcut, or bring up google, or type a url in the address bar and head out over the internet. Joe doesnt care about rendering speed or standards. All he cares about is surfing. Thats all.

Maybe he's oblivious to the real threats out there, but what the hell, Microsoft will issue a fix for it eventually. So why switch?
