  1. Review - SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition

    4.15.1000 (Jun 3, 2008)

After accidentally opening a file unsandboxed instead of sandboxed, I recently got a nasty little Vundo bug on my PC. My system restore was corrupted, and I was preparing to reinstall XP.

Then, I took a shot at SUPERAntiSpyware---and it cleared the problem almost immediately. None of the other scanners I used did a thing, not SpyBot, not AdAware, not Bazooka (although, that's pretty useless for anything). SUPER did it all hassle-free. Found the files and removed them---none of that, "we found the file, but can't delete it because it's in use" nonsense. My PC was back to normal in no time at all, and SUPER gained a new loyal user.

To that review who gave a 3 and simlpy stated "average," I'd love to see a better reason for that adjective. In my experience, SUPER worked well above average.

I give it a 4, only because I've only needed to use it the once, so I can't vouch for its ability to find everything. What I can vouch for is that it's the ONLY product I tried that worked for me. It saved me from my own admittedly stupid and reckless mistake, and for that I'm extremely thankful. As a free scanner, this one's a no-brainer. Get it and hold onto it.

  2. Comment - Ex-Googler creates 'Cuil' search engine, but results fall short of rivals

    4.15.1000 (Jul 28, 2008 - 3:14 PM)

Cuil is virtually useless in its present state (or earlier today, anyway---the site is down due to "hot" servers). A search for "cheap laptops" yielded no results. A search for "laptops" fared better, but guess what was in the search results? Sites advertising, verbatim "cheap laptops."

Don't much care for the way results are laid out, either.

  3. Comment - Toshiba looking to get high-def out of standard DVDs

    4.15.1000 (Jun 4, 2008 - 10:06 AM)

Hey, if I can upgrade the firmware of my HD-A2 to play these new magic discs, I'm all for it! Otherwise, meh...I'm still enjoying it as the fantasmagorical upconverting player it is. Never regretted the $100 I spent on it last December. Between the free discs and the quality of playback of standard DVDs (even without 1080p), yeah, I'm bummed the format is dead, but no regrets.

I still find it amusing that Blu-Ray mindshare has dropped since HDDVD died. Amazing what competition can do for you sometimes. I'm sure some of the big studios are lamenting their abandonment of HD-DVD a little.

  4. Comment - Dish, EchoStar sue TiVo to keep their DVR offerings afloat

    4.15.1000 (Jun 2, 2008 - 1:44 PM)

I am a HUGE fan of Dish's DVR service---from the research I did before buying, it's the best bargain in the industry. After having it for almost a year, I'm completely hooked. If they were to be forced to cancel it...damn. If they license with Tivo, I'm afraid the fee will be raised to match Tivo's current fees. I have no idea in regard to the validity of the patent infringement claims, but either way, it's a loss for the consumer. I hope Dish's software is validated.

  5. Comment - US video game market skyrockets 57%, Xbox 360 ahead

    4.15.1000 (Apr 21, 2008 - 12:18 PM)

Meanwhile, the vast majority of all three of these home consoles are made in China. DS may still have majority made in Japan, but I'm not completely sure.

Now, mind you, I own three of the four systems mentioned, so I'm hardly one to talk. Still...

  6. Comment - Again, Microsoft stomps out Xbox 360 Blu-ray rumors

    4.15.1000 (Apr 3, 2008 - 4:46 PM)

I bought one of the $100 HD-DVD players at Wal-mart before xmas, fully knowing it may die, and I feel like I won the format war. It's a kick-ass beautiful upconverting player and I got the Bourne Trilogy for $30.

Not to mention Darkman as one of my freebies. No remorse here.

And yet, I don't see myself getting into Blu-Ray at all. Not because I'm a hater or anything, just because I find myself completely ambivalent. But take away my Dish HDDVR and we're going to have some tantrums...I hope that Tivo lawsuit gets shored up.
