  1. Review - OpenOffice.org for Linux

    1.1 (Oct 1, 2003)

The best thing Sun could have done was make this an open source project. It allows Sun to focus on what they do best while allowing OpenOffice to mature into an excellent suite for Linux.

  2. Review - Mozilla for Linux

    1.5 RC2 (Sep 27, 2003)

Mozilla is a fine Linux browser, coming prepackaged with most Linux distros. Still, I'm reserving my 5 stars for the final version of Mozilla's Firebird (http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firebird)
It's faster and slicker than Mozilla, with a few bugs to work out (version .61). BTW, there's no need to bash Micro$oft's IE. They don't make a browser for UNIX/Linux, and since that's my OS of choice why worry about something that's of no consequence (at least to me).

  3. Review - Adobe Flash Player for Windows

    7.0.14.0 (Sep 10, 2003)

I see a few issues here: how good is the new Flash MX 2004, the player and would I use them? Well, first I have to ask myself if I want to upgrade to Flash MX 2004. I do a lot of development with Flash MX, none of which is used for Web site enhancements. In theory there's a "boost in runtime" which can only be realized with the new player. Actionscript has been improved and smaller fonts are more legible. Any other benefits of upgrading to MX 2004 don't really interest me at this time. If it turns out that MX 2004 is the best thing since sliced pizza and if the Windows player takes advantage of this, I still WOULD NOT upgrade until there are players for Linux, Mac and PDAs. Having said that, I'm sure those players are forthcoming. I will rate the player a four on its own merits, but will not develop applications until there is support for multiple OS.

  4. Comment - Outlook Connector for MSN Set for Beta

    7.0.14.0 (Dec 2, 2003 - 9:48 AM)

Actually two complains with Outlook Connector.

    1) It's reminiscent of the name "Ximian Connector" for Outlook.

Ximian Connector for Microsoft Exchange allows Ximian Evolution as a Client for Microsoft Exchange 2000 and 2003. BTW, this is a Linux solution to accessing an Exchange server.

    2) Microsoft should offer a true (free) interface to allow other clients to access the Exchange server.

  5. Comment - Microsoft to Open Windows Media Video

    7.0.14.0 (Sep 12, 2003 - 9:54 PM)

The Helix Server, while closed, at least allows multiple formats to stream. I would like to see Micro$oft offer that option, but I know better.
