  1. Review - digsby

    Build 60 (r22564) (Jun 26, 2009)

Definitely the best multi-protocol IM client out there. I switched from Pidgin to Digsby last year and couldn't be happier. It blows the rest out of the water.

  2. Review - Notepad2

    3.1.21 RC2 (Feb 24, 2009)

An excellent free Notepad replacement. It is one of the first things I install on a new box. I do, however, wish it was an MDI (tabs) application instead of an SDI (separate windows) application, but the author has stated he does not intend to support that.

  3. Review - Trillian

    3.1.12.0 (Nov 27, 2008)

This was good years ago. Pidgin surpassed it a long time ago, and now Digsby (http://www.digsby.com/) easily blows them all away.

  4. Review - µTorrent for Windows

    1.8 Build 6723 Alpha (Dec 3, 2007)

uTorrent has always been my BitTorrent client of choice.

It is silly to assume that this program is suddenly compromised, just because the new development team has a business connection to companies trying to promote the legal uses of BitTorrent. Since neither we, nor anyone else, has seen the source code, there is no reason to assume something bad is happening. If you're so suspicious, why don't you do a little packet sniffing and find out the truth for yourself? Until then, how about keeping the conspiracy theories to yourself?

  5. Review - cFosSpeed

    4.07 Build 1374 Beta (Nov 27, 2007)

cFosSpeed is a very handy QoS application. It lets you do things like set your BitTorrent client to full speed, and since it [using default cFosSpeed settings] gets the lowest priority, it'll use your full bandwidth unless you're using it for other things that are typically higher priority, like VoIP or web surfing.

You can always see the changelog at http://www.cfos.de/beta/speed_whatsnew.txt

  6. Comment - The Internet can still be a positive force, World Wide Web Foundation says

    4.07 Build 1374 Beta (Nov 17, 2009 - 8:00 PM)

Uh, no one ever claimed that Berners-Lee invented the Internet. Everyone knows Al Gore did that!

  7. Comment - iPhone cannot win the smartphone wars

    4.07 Build 1374 Beta (Oct 27, 2009 - 4:03 PM)

The whole 85,000 apps on iPhone argument is disingenuous. Yes, the App Store has that many applications. But how many of those overlap with the applications on Android Market? For instance, what is probably the most popular mobile application ever, Pandora, exists in both stores (and many others), so that one doesn't really count in anyone's favor. The same could apply to probably hundreds of other applications (Google Maps, Shazam, etc.).

Also, how many of those 85,000 applications are actually used, or are any good? While scrolling through the Android Market, I can see how many applications get low user ratings, or have very few download numbers. How many of those apps are just repeating the functionality of dozens of other apps, just in a slightly different way? It is a certainty that Apple's App Store is the same way.

So what we're really talking about is not 85,000 applications. What we're really talking about is the question of how many quality, unique applications exist. Obviously at the moment, Apple is far ahead, with their long lead time. But now that there's an ongoing explosion of Android handsets coming out this quarter and next quarter, I think it'll be only a matter of months before the App Store and the Android Market have very similar numbers of quality applications.

  8. Comment - Final Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 public release will wait for quality control

    4.07 Build 1374 Beta (Oct 15, 2009 - 4:48 PM)

One has to wonder when Microsoft is going to get on the ball with tweaking Internet Explorer to be able to compete with all the other alternative browsers in terms of speed. With their upcoming push into cloud services and Office Web, surely they would see the value in speeding up their browser.

  9. Comment - Firefox 3.6 public beta slated for 10/14, promises faster startups, loads

    4.07 Build 1374 Beta (Oct 7, 2009 - 4:09 PM)

@mjm01010101 - why would you want to make Firefox look like IE8? IE8 does not look nice.

It's about time Mozilla combined the Stop and Reload buttons into a single one out of the box, something that we've had to manually do via a userChrome tweak for years. I've also been using the TinyMenu addon, which collapses the whole File menu bar into a single button that can go on the same bar as the address bar. And then there's the Toolbar Bookmark Menu button I use, which has all my bookmarks under a single button, also on the same bar as the address bar. So I've got only 1 bar above the tabs, not 3.

  10. Comment - Samsung announces mobile app store

    4.07 Build 1374 Beta (Aug 31, 2009 - 1:16 PM)

Wish they had done this for the Instinct last year.
