    This is pretty surreal. It makes the tinfoil hat crowd's visions of a FEMA-monitored police state sound chillingly plausible.

    Has anyone ever read Greg Bears "Queen of Angels" or "Slant"? Those two books contain the interesting notion of an Oversight Office that controls access to records such as those that AT&T is proposing to collect, doling out access only in the case of specific criminal circumstances.

    Legislators need to step in and resolve the conflict of interest between consumer rights and IP protection already.
