  1. Review - Spybot - Search & Destroy

    1.6.0.30 (Sep 16, 2008)

Version 1.6.0.30 is OK, but not nearly as good as this product used to be. Have been using Spybot SD for years, but this latest version takes a whopping *58* mins to scan my system, which is far too long.

Add to that, the fact that the download is 14.38 MB and most weekly updates are usually a few MBs worth of data combined, so this app has really gotten quite bloated overall. I have since moved this program off of my PC on to a flash drive and will only scan with it if my system acts weird.

  2. Review - Mozilla Firefox for Windows (v2)

    2.0.0.14 (Jun 20, 2008)

Before I begin my review, I would like to say to reviewers "mackley", "1uk3" and "revparadigm" - if you carefully read the title of this browser review, your comments are supposed to pertain to Firefox version *2* - not Firefox version 3.

Now that we know what browser we are actually discussing,
I have been using Firefox 2 on a daily basis as my primary browser for a little over 7 months now and I have grown to like it very much, especially the add-ons plugins that you can choose from, which I feel is the main selling point of using Firefox.

As far as more secure, less secure, secure enough, that point can always be debated ad infinitum, so I am leaving it alone. I have read far too much about that to date. ALL browsers have security issues of varying kinds - enough said.

The main reasons why I am rating Firefox 2 a "4" and not a 5 is due to 2 things - poorly designed scrollbar functionality and mediocre right-click options for revising bookmarks. Neither of these features work as well as in IE 6. Now one would think that those features would be so basic and rudimentary that Mozilla would have designed them right the first time, but that is not the case, not even with current version 2.0.0.14.

Firefox 2 is a very good browser, especially for my aging Win98SE OS, but it still has a lot of important improvements to make in order to convince me to stop using IE 6 for good.

  3. Review - Opera for Windows

    9.50 Build 10063 Final (Jun 20, 2008)

The current version (9.50) is certainly better than its predecessor, but it is still severely lacking several basic features, such as cut, copy and paste buttons. Also, there is no way to revise bookmarks via basic right-click option. You have to click the open bookmarks tab and edit bookmarks the long way, which is tedious and shows poor development.

It never ceases to amaze me how these alleged software "architects" fail to keep basic browser features intact!

If they would spend less time bashing IE and more time trying to actually develop a browser that is truly comparable to IE 6, many of us would be very happy to gladly use their new products every day.

  4. Review - Slim Browser

    4.10 Build 15 (May 26, 2008)

This version worked fine on my retro Win98SE system, but the reason why I am not rating it higher than a 3 is due to the shell not working properly with my Password Agent password manager. When I tried to Autofill the username/password, it would automatically open either the Favorites menu or Help menu, which is very strange behavior!

Other than that, it's really not that bad of an IE substitute. Certainly has MUCH more merit than Maxthon, which so many people love on this forum, but I'm not one of them! Maxthon is buggy and does not deserve the high marks that it receives.

  5. Review - Maxthon (Classic) Standard

    1.6.3.80 (May 24, 2008)

I have been reading all of these wonderful reviews about Maxthon on this forum as well as other forums, when not one reviewer bothered to mention that there isn't a 'paste' button in the toolbar! There is a 'copy' button, but no paste button?!

Why would a company make a browser with so many sophisticated features, yet intentionally omit a basic (and necessary) feature such as a 'paste' button? Terrible oversight in design IMHO.

Sure, you can paste via the dropdown Edit menu, use Ctrl+V, or right-click and paste from the context menu, but that isn't my point.

My point is that cut/copy/paste buttons should be standard on ALL browsers, but it isn't so with Maxthon.

Also, I couldn't use my password manager (Password Agent) with this browser shell. When I tried to 'Autofill' both the username and password, the command would open either the Favorites menu or Help menu?! Weird little browser Maxthon has created. Makes me curious as to why so many rave about it?
