  1. Comment - MSN to Close Adult, Mature Groups

    (Sep 25, 2005 - 10:29 AM)

I’m seeing a lot of people worried that their mature-themed sites are going to end up as part of an adult site, hello??? Stoners – put the J down! Have you read the Worldgroups site? We’ve all existed for years in one big porn ghetto (called MSN Groups), at least now, with what it appears MSN is doing, we’re going to have our own area where we can cus and spit and show art, for that I think MSN gets a cookie ;) I run two ok-sized groups, both for adults – BUT NOT PORN! One’s a digitally-enhanced nude art group and the other a chopper site. The first one has thousands of stunning nude photographs that I’ve taken over the years – NOT PORN, BUT ART!, pics that I’ve digitally modified to mimic forms and styles of my other passion – motorcycles. This other group is where me and all my tattooed and leather(y) buddies who like to ride and build our choppers shoot the sh*t (you can imagine our language isn’t always “proper” …that’s why we got booted from regular MSN groups – we’re all gutter mouths ;) ). So finally, with Worldgroups, no more kids that I don’t want, no porn or child porn or crap all around us, just trash talking riders and aficionados of “nude chops.”. THANKS to MSN for finally letting us be respected ADULTS and not porn dudes (finally, someone “gets it”) – this new “Unfiltered” section (see the WG site and below) will work out just perfectly! To me, it’s a match made in chopper heaven! SIGN ME UP!

    (from the Worldgroups site)
NEW 'UNFILTERED' SECTION: If you operate or belong to a group that might violate the policies of your current Group platform, yet is not sexually explicit in nature, locate your group in the new 'Unfiltered' category. 'Unfiltered' is the censorship-free zone where adults can talk about adult topics in an environment free from children. Learn more . . .

  2. Comment - MSN to Close Adult, Mature Groups

GuysGuysGals, c’mon, what in the world! Everyone’s being a ChickenLittle! (iN ADVANCE, SORRY FOR THE LENGTH, BUT THIS MIGHT SAVE YOU TIME INSTEAD OF READING ALL THE WRONG INFO BELOW.) You’re complaining about having to rebuild your group when WorldGroups takes over, you’re complaining about having to pay for storage, you’re complaining about no features, you’re complaining about having to “redo” your groups, you’re complaining about not being a “porn” group (so why is MSN forcing you to a “porn” site), you’re complaining about being thrown into a site with child porn…Come on! Every single one of these issues is addressed in their public statements.

    So, let me summarize:
    - go here to see who they are talking about working with: http://www.worldgroups.com/ Not entirely sure who they are but by the looks of the owner of the website, these guys are no schlock outfit, not likely MSN would work with anyone that wasn’t best-in-class – see: http://www.responsiblemediatechnologies.com/ These guys look like they are ‘the bomb’ and as Ed pointed out, this could be a huge attempt by MSN to maintain a hold on this area of the site without really “keeping it,” in other words, “is this really another company?”
    - the features on WorldGroups include: free UNLIMITED storage (no more multiple ID’s on MSN just to get around their stupid limitations), an “unfiltered” section for everyone with a non-porn group, but one with a mature theme (in other words, no porn, but “adult art” and adult themes and language are cool, but, bottomline, looks like you can go there and BE AN ADULT without encountering anything like porn
    - “one click conversion” Sounds like what it is – EASY. No rebuilding a group, no redoing the whole site, one click sounds like they’ve made it easy and seemless for all of us. (Btw, I’ve had my group going for 3 years, around 3500 members, maybe 1000 active, and I have spent more time than I can justify ;) developing it, I’m here because Y! sucks and MSN gave us some tools, but if the new guys are near as good as MSN, I’m going to be stoked.
    - On the child porn stuff, go to their owner site, the Responsible Media…..site – they don’t do that stuff, which is more than you can say about Yahoo and Google, looks like MSn is doing the right thing here finally. Get rid of this scourge, yeah.
    - They talk about new features on the WorldGroups home page, but then don’t explain them too much, but it doesn’t matter, they are NEW FEATURES – when is the last time MSN gave us any new features??? Maybe this is a case where MSN wanted to give us more but to do so it would appear they were trying to “grow” their adult business…not too “butterfly” is it?, so they “move” to a new service…hmmm?
    - Guys – VIDEO, unlimited storage! Almost a “new millennium” upgrade huh? Unlimited storage? If I’m reading this right, along with the “Playlister” feature they are talking about, sounds like a smokin’ iPod for video.

Makeup your own minds, but I’m staying put. I wish MSN would tell us when this will happen, but I’ll wait, WHY? Cuz there’s nowhere else to go that even flirts with the features they are talking about giving us here… Sorry for how long this got, but man, just stp reading all the crap on this board and LISTEN TO THE FACTS. Here, see the letter I got from them.

    Hello,

Thank you for writing to MSN Groups Technical Support.

This is Dolores and I will be assisting you today.

Regarding your inquiry about MSN Adult Groups, there have been speculations about our plans for MSN Adult and Mature-rated Groups. We hope that the responses to the frequently asked questions below will answer your concerns:

Will MSN Adult Rated Groups be Shut Down?

MSN will no longer host adult contents, but it does not mean you cannot continue to enjoy Adult Groups. We will provide the tools for you to move your Group to a new service that contains new and improved features. Details on how to take advantage of the new service will be made available soon. Please check your Groups email address and the Whats New section for updates.

Why are you shutting Adult Groups down?

MSN services are used by a broad audience with over 420 million unique users visiting MSN each month worldwide. In an effort to ensure that content is appropriate for all viewers, we decided to make these changes to MSN Groups.

Hosting and developing communities for adult content is not an area of expertise for MSN.

What if my Group contains no porn?

The new service will allow users to choose from two options. A site for adult rated content (including sexually explicit material) and a site for mature-rated content (no sexually explicit material). You get to decide which one is appropriate for your Group and your needs. MSN Adult Groups today mixes both, but the new service will allow you to choose the category that best fits your needs.

Does this apply to Mature-Rated or any other Groups?

Only adult rated Groups will be affected. If your Group is rated Mature it will not change.
Is this the first step in shutting down the rest of Groups?

At this time, we are transitioning Adult Groups but there are no other changes to MSN Groups. Today there are multiple places to share information with groups of people on MSN including MSN Spaces and MSN Groups. We are committed to continue providing a place for our customers to connect with each other in group settings.

Who will provide the new service?

To ensure the Adult Group communities needs are met, we will be working with a third-party service who specializes in hosting and developing communities for adults, whether that means sexually explicit material or simply adults wanting to be an environment free from minors. We will be providing details of the new service provider soon.

Will I have to pay for this service?

No. The core service will be provided at no additional cost and will offer additional features not currently available in Groups. For example, unlike the storage limits on Groups, the new service will place no restrictions on storage for photos or even videos.

So what is this rumor I have heard about credit cards?

You will continue to see the MSN Adult Groups that you are a member of if they have been moved to the new service. You will not need to verify your age with a credit card to access the content you already have access to. However, to ensure that minors are not able to access inappropriate content, you will be asked to verify your age using a credit card if you wish to see content in some NEW adult-content types, but there is certainly no obligation for you to do this.

Will I have to rebuild my Group from scratch?

Not at all. We have been working hard to build an easy way for you to move your content with one-click conversion to the new service and maintain your content and membership.

Will my Group be moved without my permission?

Absolutely not. We will ask you for your permission to move any content to the new service and will not move anything unless you or your Group Manager tell us it is OK.

What do I need to do?

For now, continue to enjoy MSN Groups. We will notify our users through e-mail and the Whats New Section in the near future. The new service offers a much richer experience for our Adult Groups users at no additional cost and more choice in the classification of your Group. We will make it easy for you to ensure you do not have to start your Group from scratch. We will keep you updated.

If you have other concerns, please feel free to write us back.

Thank you for using MSN Groups.

    Sincerely,

    Dolores
