  1. Review - TK8 StickyNotes

    3.0 Beta (Nov 10, 2009)

I didn't actually try the program because this program is crippleware and not freeware as noted. You are limited to only 5 stickies unless you buy the pro version, which can pretty much make this crippled version useless.

I offer a two star rating for making this crippleware so limited and uninviting with it's limitations.

  2. Review - AllMyNotes Organizer

    1.02 Build 112 Beta (Oct 3, 2009)

Version reviewed: version 1.02, build #112 (BETA)

Finally! A Note Outliner that isn't overbearing, bloated, crammed so full of features that the interface is intimidating!

For years now I have been looking and waiting for just the right level of features for a note outliner and thus far AllMyNotes has come the closest.

A clean and intuitive interface compliments a nicely done skin, which allows you to just jump right in taking notes. No need to set up a file to use, select what file to us, just run the program and start making notes that you need.

I am not very keen on skins for programs and could careless about that feature but! the skins included with this program are very nicely done and easy on the eyes unlike some skins you get with other skinned programs out there. The skins are not distracting at all. Though I would love to see the ability to switch to native Windows GUI, but will not scoff if that never happens.

It has the common basic formatting features that you would need, bold, italic, underline, alignments, font size and face selection and more. It only lacks two features that I believe should be there and that is bullets for lists and the ability to insert images such as bmp, jpg, gif and png.

If you've been fed up with trying to find just the right balance for a notes program, try AllMyNotes here and see if like me, it has just the right balance you've been looking for.

(Currently there is a planned deluxe version noted on their site. Review was done using the free version listed on their site at the time)

  3. Review - KDE

    4.3 RC3 (Jul 23, 2009)

KDE 4.x, The Wannabe Vista of the Linux Desktops!

In fact, KDE 3.x had the right idea, it was usable, it was clean, it was polished, it had some glitz to it and you knew how to use it.

KDE 4.x on the other hand has taken a most foul turn in development and has become not so user friendly at all and focused all on glitz and none on usability. Add to the pain of this uber awesome interface(though sweet looking, but not so sweet to use) is the fact that it requires enormous amounts of resources. I have a 1.8 ghz box with 2 gb of ram, and I could barely use KDE 4.x at all. Granted my PC isn't the latest PC of the month, it's about 2 years old, but still, systems should still run on a 1.8 ghz box with 2 gb of ram without making you want to scream.

The new start menu is strenuous as you have to click through sections and click back out of sections. The desktop itself is pure gadget setup, even the icons for your desktop are a gadget.

Gnome and XFCE on the other hand may not be oh so full of glitz and wonders, but they are clean, smooth and don't require a top of the line $7,000 USD AlienWare box to run on.

Now if you really want glitz that doesn't suck your PC's blood dry and want usability, then check out Enlightenment DR17. They did what I think KDE 4.x was trying to do. It's glitz, it's easy on resources, it's *usable*.

I give KDE 3.x 5 stars, but KDE 4.x gets 1 star. I really think KDE has taken a seriously wrong turn in it's development. One that it may not be able to return from.

  4. Review - Microsoft Security Essentials

    1.0.1407.00 Beta (Jun 24, 2009)

This program is no longer available for download (as of 24 June, 2009) from Microsoft and no mention of if and when it will be available again.

So now I can't beta test this beta of theirs and am just a bit upset of the hoops I had to go through only to find out that you can't download it now.

So a "1" for now until they (if they ever) allow a download again.

  5. Review - Lotus Symphony for Windows

    1.3 (Jun 12, 2009)

It is a very nice suite which offers a clean and to the point interface offering just enough of what you would typically need to use instead of tossing a ton of toolbars and buttons in your face. Seemingly rock solid and stable as well, but it suffers greatly from one drawback which is that it is so so very slow.... In comparison to say OpenOffice, it takes near 5 times longer to load Lotus Symphony.

But if you have a superior top of the line PC and don't need all the extra features and functionality of most of the other office suites, then Lotus Symphony maybe just what you've been looking for.

  6. Comment - Mozilla aims to revolutionize Web layout with new Firefox font support

Didn't we already go through this kind of scenario with Microsoft and it's Internet Explorer?

Ah, I was unaware of the get a second one deal.

I also love how someone came along here and gave a thumbs down to every comment here.

  8. Comment - Tough luck iTunes 9, Zune 4 rocks

    1.3 (Sep 17, 2009 - 1:35 PM)

It was amazing seeing how you took so many negatives about the Zune 4.0 Software and made them positives.. /sarcasmoff

Seriously though, you kind of stepped on yourself several times in this article. It might have been wiser to let another author do this article, one that is less bias towards one side or the other.

Otherwise, it is nice though to hear how much effort MS is putting into not only Zune itself, but the software for interfacing with it.

The only thing that's holding me back from grabbing a Zune HD is the storage size. I need more than 32 gigs because I typically use my iPod Classic for software backup now and then and would want to be able to do that with the Zune HD. I know, comparing an iPod Classic to a Zune HD is like Apples and Oranges. I just don't like the looks of the previous Zune models, which of course do come with larger storages. I know the iPod Touch doesn't have huge storage either. But I seriously love the looks of the Zune HD! All reports also show that the audio quality from the Zune HD is better than any iPod.

Personally I don't care who is who, who makes what, I'm going to buy what works for me. I was even looking at the Sony Walkman line of Players, but decided that if I do buy a new player, likely it'll be the Zune HD.

Meh, enough incoherent chatter from me.. Continue flames and or debates ;-)

  9. Comment - An OLPC operating system for grown-ups

    1.3 (Sep 17, 2009 - 1:15 PM)

The mission of this non-profit association (One Laptop Per Child) is to develop a low-cost laptop - the "$100 Laptop" - a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the world's children.

I thought the point of this whole thing was to get computers into the hands of children, not adults. If they're having to adapt the distro for adults, then there's something seriously wrong with the whole operation for OLPC. This news seriously undermines the whole point of the OLPC program.

  10. Comment - Without the fastest JavaScript, can Opera 10 RC still lay claim to speed?

    1.3 (Aug 26, 2009 - 2:18 PM)

I used to be an Opera user, since version 3.something. But stopped using Opera when it without question let malware be installed on my computer last year when I visited a free font site. I'll miss Opera, but for me security over speed is paramount.
