  1. Review - ImgBurn

    2.0.0.0 (Aug 19, 2006)

I love this freeware-never ever had a problem. To OP - what trojan? I'm using Kaspersky & Norton [both current], and neither reported anything whatsoever.

  2. Review - ConvertXtoDVD

    2.0.17 (Aug 19, 2006)

An amazing piece of work, and well work the fes $, esp to help support the author & his other cool tools! Very, very rarely I've had some idiosyncratic problems {like a DVD ripped to AVI in two chunks that's 25fps [PAL] that I've added subtitles to & then am converting to a NTSC DVD - for some reason, only the first half gets the subs, the 2nd doesn't always. Like I said, relatively rare.} BTW, the subs are selectable, unlike a lot of other DVD authoring apps [means you can have them display onscreen or not], not like many other similar apps where they're hardcoded and you can't turn em off.

I also like the cool menu features. Perhaps a bit limited when compared to say Nero, but Nero does a poor job with PAL --> NTSC, anyway, and I really don't need all their DVD authoring bells/whistles.

Not a whole lot of choices authoring your menu, pretty basic, but that's good enough for my needs. Can use own background images, main title, item titles, # of menu items, etc.

Other nice options are selecting how the menu performs [ie, auto-start with first video & bypass main menu; go back to menu after each video is finished or not; loop playback, etc.

That bit about NOT going back to menu I use all the time as in above example of a DVD ripped to two parts. I now don't even have to bother joining the sections, as I just tell ConvertXToDVD to play next file -- often the transition isn't even detectable - this saves time, and also helps not introducing other problems in joining.

It's very fast, also - a full 2 hour DVD often in 60-90 min. Also integrates with vso's CopyToDVD to burn your finished DVD. [CopyToDVD is also an excellent CD-DVD burner in it's own right.

    So, highly recommended.

  3. Review - Easy Burning

    1.86 (Oct 7, 2005)

Excellent, just excellent. Can't say enough good things about this way-cool app. I was looking for a freeware CD burner for my old Win98SE that could burn LFN over the Joliet 64 limit. This one [supposedly] does that. I'm testing that out now. It theoretically has the capability to do 103 char filenames, Long Joliet, as well as 207 chars, ISO Level 4. In addition it does UDF format, eg, popularly associated with drag-to-disk apps like Roxio Easy CD, formerly Adaptec DirectCD.

As I said, I'm still in the process of testing very long filenames under Win98SE [this is not a prob under later Win, eg XP], but so far have had absolutely no problems.

Another nice feature here is that Easy Burning includes an addon to identify LFN. It'll show you which files exceed X number of characters. Now, this is also way cool, as anyone who has burned extra-long LFN can attest, when your burner either truncates the filename without warning or else freezes, etc.

Easy Burning site also has several other freeware CD-DVD burning utils, so be sure to check it out.

For LFN identification, I use another freeware prog called "Long Filename Finder," you simply input your path to check [and subfolders if you want, then put in the max filename length your burner can accept, then pow! you've got a list of filenames that exceed that. Then, you can go thru the list and manually rename. I know there are other freeware renamers that can auto-truncate to X number of characters length, but if you want more control over shortening names, this one's for you.

    Find it here:

In any case, Easy Burning is a wonderful app & well worth a look. Simple, lots of options, and fast!

And still think so, even more so.

  5. Review - XPlorer

    0.40.96 (Oct 7, 2005)

Overall, not bad. Still a bit buggy, but that goes with the territory at BetaNews, so I accept that. Xplorer: confusing name, though. At first I thought it was an update for Xplorer2 Lite, the freeware excellent file manager. Now, Xplorer2 Lite beats the pants of this one.

If you want the great, easy-to-use Xplorer2, then go here:
    http://zabkat.com/x2lite.htm
NOTE: this page is for the freeware vers; the downloadable shareware version has lots more features.

Finally, my personal fave file manager is Tracker3, just recently updated. Get it here:

Note: I am hesitant in using one review/critique to post links for other alternatives, but I am doing so in the hopes of assisting others looking for decent alternatives [freeware, in the case] for the unbelievably clunky Micro$oft Explorer.
