  1. Review - FolderShare

    14.0.1383.0530 Beta (Jan 16, 2009)

Similar situation to johnrc2 re different error messages & access:

Installed release prior to this one on two of several networked computers(vista)--

    A. able to log in on first computer

    B. unable to log in with identical credentials on second computer, even though service has icons / prompts for multiple computers.

NOW, WITH THIS RELEASE INSTALLED, cannot log in with any computer anymore.

Could be a Vista issue(how the tcpip stack was reworked)....at a couple of my daytrading data sites i get similar inconsistent access(i can access once or twice a day only, exact time of day or session length or which computer varying greatly-- while all other OS from win98 thru XP can connect at will and stay connected indefinitely without getting booted) -- it's not a firewall nor internet zones(browser not utilized for connecting anyway) issue for sure.

    1 for FolderShare
    1 for Vista
    1 for MS

  2. Review - Google Chrome for Windows

    2.0.157.0 (Jan 15, 2009)

    1. General display and tab scroll bugs on dual monitor setups.

    2. No tab manager or even a tab list button.

    3. No support for using bookmark locations of other browsers instead.

Google Chrome is way too minimalist re settings, tweaks and addons-- to be of use, and still needs a lot of work.

On the other hand, it's the fastest browser-- even when opening a kazillion tabs.

  3. Review - Maxthon (v2)

    2.5.1.4075 (Jan 14, 2009)

BOBAD: it's not about getting one's panties in a tizzy over bugs-- as a lot of those bugs are Maxthon's fault for illogical reasons:

Ever since Maxthon was lauded by Microsoft-- they have eerily copied their modus operandi of arbritrary & proprietary changes & formats galore.

Tell me when you see in their forums a discussion such as: We're thinking of redoing Favorites, Tabs, ETC. for x and y reasons-- what do you think, what location would be best for you, etc.
Even if only as a warning not to install a particular build because it's a major change in some area would be very helpful.
Instead, we get a surprise after upgrading-- for something that was not broken to begin with-- but now is causing some buggy or unwanted behavior. Then, after complaining, we still don't get an explanation for the change in the first place.
    _______________________________________________

FYI this latest build will either crash at some previously-opened sites OR will lose last unsaved session completely.

FYI2 Close / Maximize / Minimize / etc. buttons missing...

I second Blaxima and DudeBoyz almost word for word.

This was at one time my default browser-- but between arbritrary changes(some of which have been admittedly reworked after user clamor) and some site incompatibilities(again, admittedly, this affects all browsers-- even IE on some MS sites!-- and fault can be attributted to individual sites)-- i regretfully had to find other options, although not voluntarily:

Maxthon used to be a perfect alternative to IE-- especially after security patches dumbed down / arbritrarily disabled various functions-- "while actually being a lot safer w/o having to resort to / depend on those tactics".
I work on the web with a kazillion different websites, many with embedded multimedia / live content-- Maxthon was perfect, esp. for those sites that demand IE exclusively...it would still render all pages / content correctly, while IE would be hit or miss.
Sadly, that is no longer the case, no matter how permissive the settings / everything enabled / popups & ads blockers disabled / sites added to Trusted Zones.

This latest release hangs and/or crashes when attempting to open-- with a handful of sites from its last session on previous build BTW.
That is just an FYI more than anything...it is a Beta release...although its previous build(and other installed browsers as well) had no issues with those sites.

I have zero time to troubleshoot, so it's wait until subsequent releases...although such an older, established browser shouldn't be undergoing all that-- it's like back to square one / newer browsers don't have such issues.

Maxthon developers need to take a good, hard reassesment of priorities and goals:

    1. Stop with arbritrary changes, especially proprietary ones, that are more cosmetic(ergo annoying) rather than useful. Couple of examples:
    A. Bookmarks-- either use standard IE folder locations(and for history / cookies / logins / autofill & autocomplete / etc.) or develp a module to periodically import / sync data.
    DITTO FOR MOZ browsers.
Just this one step will get many more users and a chance for many of them to set Maxthon as default.
    B. Search-- stop trying to make a few dollars with this, while making it very hard for the average user to change default...
the money will come with improvement and higher browser share.

    2. Take a good, hard look at main + innovative competitors and combine their features 'while improving each".
Many users are forced to use a different browser, whether for work, site compatibility reasons, or a couple of great features not found in other browsers:
the browser that most implements steps 1A & 2 will win the browser wars. Some examples:
    A. How FlashPeak SlimBrowser and FF TileTab Extension are able to tile / adjust tabs-- improve on this by having the browser remember the tab sizes and positions upon reopening.
    B. Include Groups functions in initial Restore Last Open page--I may not want to reopen all those pages / put up with that long wait, but because i don't want to lose them(not having saved to group last open session)-- this forces me to open up a competing browser!!!
    C. Useful Context Menu Addons like found In Avant/extensions/misc...take it a step further with things like Go to Url, Search With for plain text(even misspelled text).

And of course, fix current problems re site incompatibilities and:
restoring from last session takes too long AND disables browser completely until all / each tabs load entirely.

Partner with or acquire(or at least look at their features) BaoBau IE Sessions, IE7 Pro, etc.

  4. Review - DirectX Happy Uninstall

    4.18 (Jan 14, 2009)

What useless, moronic, uninformed, negative reviews:

    Description
DirectX Happy Uninstall(DHU) is a powerful management tool for Microsoft DirectX. Using DHU, you can BACKUP, RESTORE, DISC-ROLLBACK, and FULL INSTALL DirectX. A correct DirectX is necessary in your computer.

    1. Sometimes a damaged DirectX cannot be repaired without removing entirely first.

    2. Ditto for rolling back to previous DirectX version / uninstalling upgrade / cleaning up after a messy update / etc.

Above can and has held true for various MS / Windows components over the years...esp. those with no uninstall option and/or that do not completely remove everything even when offering uninstall.

This is proven by the bountiful proliferation and success of products like DirectX remover, ieradicator, litepc, vlite, dial-a-fix, etc.

Att. Prospective Flamers-- notice i say "sometimes".

Yeah, MOTO's... if you remove IE you can't browse, if you remove Windows you can't compute...

A freeware alternative to this has existed for years now... although it hasn't been updated for a long time...

  5. Review - TheWorld Browser for Windows 2000/XP/Vista

    2.4.0.1 (Jan 14, 2009)

McAleck: the point is to replace IE....esp. for sites that demand IE exclusively.....

I've been trying TheWorld as default browser....hiccups when called by UpdateNotifier though:
if it opens at all, takes a real long time...when it doesn't(most of the time), it forces you to close several instances of each in something like Task Manager- one by one...before being able to open it again gltch free.

Its session restore is a good idea...ALTHOUGH it wants to open already-closed(ergo unwanted) tabs too. AND... it would be nice if a save to group option were added to that restore page.

Its Download Manager is good-- particularly its useful Open File button that is immediately available, saving unnecessary clicks / dialogs.

TheWorld needs to implement the tile tab funciton found in FlashPeak SlimBrowser, and further improve it by allowing particular tile configurations / positions to be saved, so as to not have to reconstruct them upon each browser reopen.

If FlashPeak and TheWorld could be melded into one, it'd be awesome.

  6. Comment - Lenovo intros multimedia PCs for gaming, dual-screen laptop

    2.4.0.1 (Jan 8, 2009 - 1:38 AM)

    Don't be a wise guy, FF...and re-read yourself:

the allinone = only 4gb... ddr3 too-- be nice to at least have 3x2gb for it...

Point is to really advance-- go the 64bit or 32bit w/ pae route...some desktop boards are now supporting 130+gb....

Dual monitor seems like a great idea... dual hard drive, even if only two smaller ones, would really top the icing on the cake.

  7. Comment - Invitation to final beta test of Ad-Aware 2009 edition

    2.4.0.1 (Dec 19, 2008 - 7:18 PM)

No thanks-- recent final releases are buggy and bloated enough.

This recent direction down the bloated, hog path is ill-advised.

  8. Comment - Microsoft to issue out-of-cycle patch for the 'unknown exploit'

    2.4.0.1 (Dec 17, 2008 - 1:41 AM)

Microsoft requests that until the patch is released and installed-- to please refrain from booting up Windows:

if computer access is an absolute necessity in the meantime, please utilize Linux.
