1.5 Final (Dec 3, 2005)
First of all, I never said that Firefox contained spyware.
Secondly, I agree with roj about Firefox. In my opinion, the dev team should at the very least maintain or oversee a core set of extensions, to ensure compatibility. You can whine that you don't need a "session saving" extension, but the ability to save session state is an obvious feature that every modern browser should have. Get real. And that's just one example.
Thirdly, thanks, BetaNews, for deleting my previous review, which contained nothing more offensive than half the "reviews" found on this site.
I'm sick of having reviews deleted for no good reason, while reviews that contain blatant name-calling remain.
So, the rate-it-5-just-because-it's-freeware kids win: You're reading the last review that httpd.confused will ever write on this site. Hooray!
11.1.70 Beta (Dec 1, 2005)
I couldn't care less if Media Center was reviled on every site on the web. I don't go by what other people say; I use what I like, and everyone else can go straight to hell.
But if Winamp is rated highly, to the exclusion of Media Center, there are two likely explanations: First, Winamp is free, except for its "Pro" version (which is a joke). Second, Media Center isn't very well known. It's kind of hard for Media Center to come out on "top" if it isn't even reviewed.
The library, conversion features, burning and ripping features... All crush Winamp like a grape as far as I'm concerned. That, and a semi-normal interface, rather than a cutesy turd that tries to look like a real stereo, as if that either enhances usability or makes you think "Holy crap, this is serious stuff!"
Use what you like. Your choice of software is like the music you listen to with it--enjoy whatever you enjoy, and screw anyone who disapproves. That's what I do. Media Center is a good solution for me, and no amount of whining or ranting to the contrary will change that.
P.S. I rated with a 5 just to get on your nerves. =)
1.2.3 Beta Build 356 (Nov 30, 2005)
Nice try, Nefarious. You got one right, one half-right, and ignored the rest.
7.0 Build 46 (Nov 30, 2005)
Not the "mutt's nuts", for reasons I outlined below.
Skip it.
1.9 (Nov 30, 2005)
A version increase simply for adding translations? Never seen that done before.
HashTab is a nice idea, and it works well. I just wish it supported more hash algorithms. CRC-32 is antiquated and, while some idiots may still use it, the algorithm itself is essentially useless. (I have personally encountered collisions while using it.)

I don't think it should even be legally possible to consent to installation of a rootkit. I can't sign a waiver that allows someone to legally stab me; nor should I be able to do away with my computing security and privacy by clicking an OK button.

I don't understand comments like this. It isn't lawyers who are the real problem; it is all the scumbags who bring illegitimate lawsuits.
This is the same sort of thinking that blames illegal immigrants rather than the employers who knowingly hire them.

What are you talking about? The point of class action suits isn't so everyone can get rich; it is so that all eligible parties get back what they deserve.
Sometimes it works out better than other times, but if you think this legal action is pointless just because not all Sony music customers will end up millionaires, you are being as goofy as you are when you review software.

Except that it doesn't do anything for outbound traffic...
