  1. Comment - H-1B limits met after just one week of petitions

    (Apr 10, 2008 - 1:47 PM)

On the contrary mon frere, 3-4% *is* actually close to full employment which most economists define in laymans terms as "anyone who wants a job can get a job"... and no, that doesn't necessarily mean that someone out-of-work can immediately get another job at the same level, salary, etc. but that they can actually get a job.

BTW... it's called competition... if we can cheaper labor at the same or better level from elsewhere then we will. The answer is not more regulation at all - the gov't can't manage its way out of a paper bag so what makes you think they would do anything to improve the situation? It's a global economy - either get on the train, improve yourself, or just get run over... it may not be pretty, but survival of the fittest is the natural order of things.

Now you might be onto something in getting someone with an H1B to do math for me might be a good idea as that will give me some extra time to learn/do something more important. You know, like giving Economics 101 and research lessons to isolationist leftists who obviously don't even know how to use Google to provide facts to support their misguided and antiquated arguments.

"The unemployment rate is at or near an all time high, yet instead of hiring Americans we continue to offshore or bring over people that work for less than 1/2 what we make here."

There’s certainly nothing wrong with market forces at work. Although from your statement, I deduce that you are probably a bit left of center when it comes to such things and would rather the gov't "protect" people by allowing them to continue with their heads in the sand while other nations people get smarter and more marketable. Isolationism has never worked and is even more dangerous today when we truly are part of a GLOBAL economy. Better to face up to the fact and keep yourself ahead of the curve than to hope that you don’t get off-shored. The government certainly isn’t going to help (nor should it).

As for the unemployment rate, 5.1% is NOT EVEN CLOSE TO AN ALL TIME HIGH!!!! In 1982, it peaked at nearly 11% and has been in a range of 4%-6% for more than a decade. In fact 4% (only 1% less than we have now) is almost considered full-employment since there will always be a segment of the working-age population that either refuse to or cannot work.

  3. Comment - The GSM overseas wireless market heats up for US customers

    (Dec 21, 2007 - 4:45 PM)

Heck, there are better deals that this... I used a SIM card purchased via MobileWorld (Carphone Warehouse in the UK) and rates were 5 cents a minute calling back to the U.S. from the UK. That's cheaper than calls within the UK (15 pence or ~30 cents a minute)... on top of this they even offered a number in the U.S. you could call which would then ask you to enter the UK number you wanted to really call. This ended up costing about 17 cents a minute if I recall, but was a bit of a pain to use and since the company was footing the bill anyway, I wasn't going to jump through too many hoops to save the extra 13 cents a minute :)

  5. Comment - DirecTV, TiVo Cozy Up Once Again

    (Aug 2, 2007 - 5:00 PM)

I think it's a complete toss-up now... as someone just pointed out... the fast-forward/rewind compensation feature has been recently added which makes the DirecTv DVR pretty much on par with the old DirecTivos... of course, standalone TiVos have some additional functionality I'd like to see surrounding downloads and sharing of media, but I can see why, from DirecTv's persective, these features are not around on the DirecTivo or the their own DVRs.
