  1. Review - Mozilla Firefox for Windows (v2)

    1.0 RC1 (Oct 29, 2004)

A breath of fresh air. I've used web browsers since the days of NCSA Mosaic (what IE ripped off) and have used everything from IE, Maxthon, Opera to Firefox, and by far my most pleasant experience has been with Firefox. The install was painless and fast. All of my settings were imported so that I didn't need to fiddle with it to get it to work like my old browser (IE) used to.

I especially enjoy the power it has in its simplistic interface. It's easy to use, but has a TON of customizations you can do. It has a turbo mode which I've noticed speeds it up even more than what it is 'out of the box'. Try opening the URL "about:config" and be amazed at the powerful tweaking it allows! I will never go back to anything else. No annoying ad banners like Opera, and yet all the features are still there.

Oh yeah, and don't get caught up in the debate about memory usage. It's a bogus attempt to make it look bigger. IE is integrated into Windows so it's memory is spread out over many different names, whereas Firefox's is in one file... firefox.exe.

Either you will download it and love it, or hate it. If it is the latter, you just have a closed mind.

  2. Review - Opera for Windows

    7.60 Build 7263 Preview 2 (Oct 27, 2004)

So disappointed... The screenshot doesn't show an obnoxious ad banner, so I thought I would give it a try once again. Guess what? Opera still has ads and wants $39 to get rid of them.

Why pay for a browser when IE is free? Even Mozilla Firefox (which seems much better than opera and IE combined) is free!

I think Opera is going to have to reconsider it's business philosphy if it wants to be competitive.

Where is this car located? I am interested!

I've been considering a projector, but honestly, how good are they in a bright room? They seem unrealistic in replacing a TV, but rather useful only when using it for movies or sports in a "theatre room".

  5. Comment - Google Print Faces More Legal Hurdles

    7.60 Build 7263 Preview 2 (Oct 20, 2005 - 2:29 PM)

I can't say that I feel sorry for the publishers. How can this affect their income enough to file lawsuits? I mean, afterall, is google allowing students to download their textbooks instead of buying them? With the exception of 1 of the named companies, all center their business around education/university printing.

I have numerous hardcover books from each of the named publishers that cost probably $10 make (if you include all overhead and that is probably a grossly exaggerated $$) and were sold for $160. To prevent the used market from 'stealing' profits away from them, they simply issue a new edition every year with the ever so slightest modification.

Poor publishers.... life must be tough for them. But hey, look at the bright side: You will always have college kids to screw over!

  6. Comment - The Truth About Windows Genuine Advantage

    7.60 Build 7263 Preview 2 (May 14, 2005 - 1:48 AM)

When you say counterfeit, you probably mean a copy of the original, and not something that is made to look like a microsoft item and then sold as the original. If so, then your idea is false. There are pirated copies of apple software, including Panther MacOS....

I cannot think of any company that has not fallen victim to piracy and counterfeits. Even commerical linux software has been pirated. Just because it has counterfeits doesn't mean that the original must be superior in anyway to others.

If you try to use Rolex, fragrances, expensive clothing lines, etc. as an example, then yes, it makes sense that not all things have counterfeits. The raw materials are cheap making a good incentive to counterfeit things with a high margin of profit. If you are going to make a fake, wouldn't you rather fake a pair of $120 shoes rather than a cheapo $15 pair????

  7. Comment - Firefox Market Share Gains Slowing

    7.60 Build 7263 Preview 2 (Apr 29, 2005 - 6:31 PM)

Yeah, and it seems like whenever I disable cache on IE, I still end up getting temporary files appearing. Works good.
