  1. Review - Windows Media Player for Windows XP (32-bit)

    11.0.5705.5043 Beta 2 (Sep 4, 2006)

generally the ability to play a video on an external display is determined by the drivers and software of your video card (even in laptops). Check your display settings and see if you have any Video Overlay things you can tweak.
I'll rate it a 4 b/c it looks cool and they are fixing bugs, even if the progress isn't what I would hope. Meanwhile I'll stick to Q Media Player.

  2. Review - ReactOS

    0.3.0 RC2 (Aug 15, 2006)

My word. Seriously people: this was already debted quite a while back . Google search "ReactOS Reverse Engineering" and shut up
    (or go here
Meanwhile I've been wondering about this os for a long time but never grabbed parts for another 'box' as to try it. Anyone have an on topic review (since I don't).
by the way, I give it a 5 because they are sticking to their original goal of trying to create an OS that runs windows binaries, unlike SkyOS, Lindows, and several OSes before them.

  3. Review - Miranda IM

    0.4.0.3 (Feb 21, 2006)

Miranda is fantastic. under 8 megs of ram, and basically 0% cpu usage (while transfering files over AIM)!
Lack of tabs kept me away before, BUT TABS ARE a possibility, just copy the Scriver plugin to the plugins directory. http://addons.miranda-im...on=viewfile&id=1885

    plugins to use:
-->Scriver for tabs and colored chat ala AIM
(tabsrmm is also a tabs plugin, but it has more glitches)
-->SMileyAddBin for smileys in the text
-->Newawaysys for better away message support.

  4. Comment - IFPI Sues 8,000 P2P File Swappers

    0.4.0.3 (Oct 17, 2006 - 11:05 PM)

ha ha ha. regarding hiyoag's comments. yeah. after Napster shut down the first tim my best friend and me hit up the public library to see what kind of awesome music we could find. the two of us easily borrowed over 100 cds that summer. only works if you have a library worth anything though.

by the way, even though I was a fervant napster user back in the day, most music I found on there was no-name artists that most people I know hadn't heard of before. and yeah, if it was good I'd go out and buy the cd.
I still say online audio and video files promote people trying/buying new and cool stuff that we might not have given two cents about before.

  5. Comment - Wii Launches Nov. 19 in US, Dec. 2 in Japan

    0.4.0.3 (Sep 14, 2006 - 2:04 PM)

Ok. I just want to make sure we're on the same page here. 7900 GTs cost around 300 bucks right now, right? That's for your VIDEO only. And I seriously doubt that in 2 years you can get away with only a video card upgrade to stay in "the cutting edge" of computer gaming so let's add another $100-150 for more ram, and another $100-200 for a new proc as well.
total minimum: another 5-600 dollars in a few years to stay on top of the game.

and a Wii is going to cost $250?
So you don't want to buy a whole new console ($250) because you can /just/ slap in a new video card ($300-400). yeah. that makes sense. lol.

Not to mention that Game developers will REQUIRE you to do the upgrades to your computer if you just want to have decent framerate, let alone have amazing graphics. The downside AND upside to consoles is that Developers have specific pieces of hardware they can program for, and while it limits some creativity, it gives them a chance to know what they are working with and push the limits of that hardware for the next several years.

I'm pulling out of computer gaming b/c it's hands-down just too costly.

  6. Comment - Novell Renames Consumer Linux Distro

    0.4.0.3 (Aug 13, 2006 - 2:48 AM)

Now...I love linux, but i keep finding programs the keep me glued to Windows. (Girder was one for a long time, then AutoGK)
I always find it somewhat laughable that some linux distros make it a little harder to dual-boot linux AND windows and how many people zero in on that. I mean, yes. It's something we've all been doing for a long time now and every linux distro out there should be able to detect windows partitions and automatically set up the boot loader correctly by now...
but how many people have tried to get the windows boot-loader to do the dual booting? yes, it's possible. No it's not legal and no it's not fun. At least linux lets you do it...
My gripe is how stinking long it takes to boot linux still. Is it true that suse has been cutting down boot times as of recent?

  7. Comment - Report: AOL Looking to Sell UK Unit

    0.4.0.3 (Jun 3, 2006 - 4:39 PM)

How could someone buying the UK division hurt all AOL users? or all internet users? I have to say I'm confused.

Also, not sure if this will hurt the EU, but I kinda hope it does. They seem to be in the business of bullying recently. I think Microsoft and some of the other BIG names should pull out of EU as well. I mean if it was financially feasible.

  8. Comment - ReplayTV to Refocus on DVR Software

    0.4.0.3 (Dec 19, 2005 - 10:28 AM)

Freaking Sweet. I have a Hauppauge PVR-150 and it's a solid card, but it lacks in the software that it comes with. The best free software alternatives I have found are Got All Media (which is great but not completely stable with the pvr-150), and GB-PVR...which isn't great for watching live tv but sweet as far as schudled recordings goes. This deal should hopefully put Haupp even further ahead in the PVR game
