  1. Review - foobar2000

    0.9.6.7 (May 22, 2009)

"Easy to organize music with, the same way one would with J. River Media Center or MediaMonkey? Filtering, categorization, rating--these are all as easy to figure out and perform on a daily basis as with the others? Yeah--right."

In my opinion foobar blows those apps you mention out of the water on all counts. I've tried em all and none of them comes close to what I can do with foobar. But that's just my opinion.

I use two plugins, masstagger & facets, which are both found on the main foobar download page (facets in one of the off-site links at the bottom), plus a couple of custom tags, to organize and keep my collection in check. Well.. to be honest I have a couple of other plugins, but nothing that affects organizing/categorizing/filtering.. and I don't rate my music, I know what I like :) but that would be easy to implement if I wanted to.

And I like the interface, I use the built in one.. album art on the top left, playlist(s) on top right and facets at the bottom... and it looks fine, no clutter, no outlandish elements, no distractions. It keeps my collection in order, plays it, and does so without any fuss.

  2. Review - Feedreader

    3.14 Beta 2 (Feb 28, 2009)

The best desktop rss reader imo, there's a bunch more going on then what first meets the eye concerning filters and feed managing. The only reader that gives it a run for it's money is RSSOwl, but that one still needs to iron out lots of kinks. The only negative thing I have to say about Feedreader is that it's memory usage is quite high at times, although it seems to have improved slightly with this release.

  3. Review - Locate

    3.1.8.7200 RC1 (Jul 21, 2008)

Great search application, for once an app that does exactly what I want and more. With a perfect suite of commandline switches which makes using it a breeze... and it's free! What more can one ask for :)

It takes maybe 30-60 seconds to update my +2tb every other day or so. And it takes a second or two to start, already showing what I searched for, and then it's not already running in the background when I start it (I use a runbox replacement with a couple of aliases that parse switches along with what I'm searching for).

As for the AvaFind spam, I'm sure it's a great app, but I wouldn't know what to use real time indexing for, I at least have no use for it.
And having apps running all the time in the background is something I try to avoid in general.
But if you need that, for whatever reason, go ahead and buy it, or some similar app.

  4. Review - cFosSpeed

    4.21 Build 1405 Beta (Jun 3, 2008)

I've used cFos for years, both betas and stable builds, and have never ever had a problem with it.
No BSOD's, corrupt downloads or slow speeds. Well at least none caused by cFos.
And cFos is not a Netlimiter type application where you set a rule telling a program how much of your total bandwidth it can use. The traffic shaping doesn't work like that. It works by prioritizing packets sent by different applications and/or protocols, allowing high priority ones to "jump the queue".
