  1. Comment - SourceForge launches commercial 'marketplace' for open source software

    (Dec 20, 2007 - 2:46 PM)

The business model is simple, though execution not so simple. Focus on:
    1. Project hosting and information (sourceforge, freshmeat).
    2. Online media (slashdot, itmanagersjournal, linux.com)
    3. Retail (thinkgeek)
    4. Ad revenue, leveraging traffic generated by #1-3
    5. Software service brokerage (fees from marketplace).

To those who object to #5, note that #1 still offers the same free hosting and information exchange as before, at considerable expense to Sourceforge. YOU can get something for nothing from them, but they can't exist on nothing. Seems like they are trying to find ways to support free software while also charging those who are willing to pay for ads or services.
