  2. Review - SciTE

    1.75 (Jan 8, 2008)

Love Scite, been using it for years. Doesn't have all the features I would want but has all the features I really need.

  3. Review - Notepad++

    4.7.3 (Jan 8, 2008)

When it comes to producing your own syntax file it's much more limited then Scite and it the highlighter requires whitespace at times (which is bad). Lot of cool features but I won't be replacing Scite just yet.

I watched the video (only once so forgive me if I didn't spot all of the flaws, I was eating clementines). Feasible is not a word I would use to describe it. They have a lot of good ideas but the problems however are mostly with the design of the society, and they fatal.

I started writing a long detailed arguments for these but I don't have the time to do them justice.
    1) It's a culture killer. (Is rice really the best crop the Japanese should be growing?)
    2) It will never escape Sentimentalists (some folks will think the old ways were best and will lobby for it's return).
    3) The committee process is notoriously slow and will not silence Egotism.
    4) This committee process allows nut-jobs to control the direction of society.
    5) The architectural mandates are unscientific and haven't been properly vetted by the committee process.

Great, just what we need, UDP. For the love of god, we do not need folks inventing their own streaming protocols.

Yep, information should be free, but then so should everything else*. However, no one has managed to create a large scale society that does justice to the principal and at the same time not rapidly fall apart. Likewise there exists no large flourishing society with unregulated capitalism.

The only solution is to strike a balance between the two: It should be free and not free.

Sure it's confusing and appears less than optimal, but it gives people edges to work with, to brace themselves against.

The truth is, we already live in a society where it is both. We provide children with a free education but at the same time sell education to adults.

The question we should ask be asking is: Which information should be free and to what limits? Have we achieved equilibrium?

Looking at the Author's Guild's situation, it might seem like it's about money but it's more complicated. They are worried that if they don't fight it, they will waive their rights to enforce their copyrights.

There are two solutions: Do a licensing deal or get the law changed. Considering that a licensing deal will be examined carefully, as it will set a president, it would have to involve a large chunk of money.
