  1. Review - VirtualBox

    3.0.0.48728 Beta 1 (Jun 17, 2009)

3.0.0 looks good so far me on XP SP3 32 bit. None of the glaring problems of the 2.2 betas. More news later

  2. Review - VirtualBox

    2.2.2.46594 (Apr 28, 2009)

Have just updated from 2.1.4 to 2.2.2 (had to rollback from 2.2.0 to 2.1.4). Running Win XP Pro 32 bit SP3. Glad to say all of the problems I had with 2.2.0 are gone (DHCP networking for the host only network took ages to start, couldn't create large memory VMs etc)

So, 2.2.2 looks like a return to form after the abomination that 2.2.0 was!

  3. Review - Maxthon (v2)

    2.5.1.4751 (Updated) (Feb 11, 2009)

The new feature in 2.5.1 that prevents tabs from hanging the browser (ala IE8 and Google's Chrome) is impressive - it's here and works now, ahead of IE8, even though this is based on IE6/7.

    Kudos to the developer.

  4. Review - LeechGet 2009

    2.1 Build 1800 (Feb 11, 2009)

It's hopeless - it hasn't changed in years. Free Download Manager is a much better tool. Avoid.

  5. Review - Adobe Flash Player for Windows

    10.0.1.218 Beta (May 15, 2008)

With Firefox 3b5 and IE7 on XP SP3, it's much better than Flash 9 - much lower CPU for viewing youtube stuff :)

  6. Comment - First beta of Windows 7 may (or may not) be handed out next Tuesday

    10.0.1.218 Beta (Dec 4, 2008 - 5:18 AM)

    To _Hollywood:

If you install XP but then change the accounts you've created to be limited users shortly after installing it and then only log on as administrator to do updates/installs/uninstalls/configuration adjustments, then XP is pretty much as secure as Vista for the average user, and is certainly a good deal quicker.

You still need an antivirus etc and to stay up to date with patches, but that's true of Vista also.

My point is this - setting the user rights (which probably takes < 5 mins) makes a WORLD of difference.

  7. Comment - PDC 2008: Mike Nash answers your questions about Windows 7

    10.0.1.218 Beta (Oct 30, 2008 - 7:13 AM)

Mike Nash has given precious little detail here. I'm disappointed and he's probably undone some of the PR work due to his inexactness.

  8. Comment - What do you want to know about Windows 7?

    10.0.1.218 Beta (Oct 29, 2008 - 2:29 AM)

For a number of different hardware platforms, how does it performance compare with XP (both for 32 and 64 bit versions of the OS)

    e.g.

    1GB RAM Single core P4 2GHz
2GB RAM Dual core Core 2Duo
    4GB RAM Quad Core system

  10. Comment - Mozilla Firefox 3.0 final release under way

    10.0.1.218 Beta (Jun 17, 2008 - 4:14 PM)

I finally managed (2 hours late) to reach their servers at 8pm UK time on 17 June 2008, which now seem to be working. However when I downloaded the final version from spreadfirefox, it turns it out is RC3 (I did a SHA 1 comparison and byte for byte check between final and RC3), so in short, if you've got RC3, don't bother downloading the "FINAL"
