I believe there was talk about offering a "freestyle upgrade kit" for existing PCs. I don't know if it will actually happen, but I read about the idea somewhere...

I really don't see what's wrong with that. Even with several thousand beta testers, it's really a very small sampling of hardware and software that the OS is tested on. With the new error reporting tools, Microsoft will be able to get more accurate real-time data to improve the OS and its hardware and software compat. It just seems like this is a step towards what people have wanted for years... an absolutely stable and compatible OS.

There's nothing confusing about it to anyone who read the private newsgroups. The announcement was made several times between RTM and Oct 25th. If you're a tester and you didn't know about it, it's because you weren't paying attention.
