Wow. You apparently know nothing... just because "HD-DVD" has "DVD" in the name doesn't mean it's a "simple upgrade". Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD use violet lasers to read discs that contain smaller pits than a DVD, allowing for more storage.
It's not a simple upgrade technology.

Ironically, the 9/11 attacks slowed down the digital transition in NYC, as they knocked out the digital transmitters on the mast of the WTC.

But wait, he obviously has the original iPhone (mentioned the sunken headphone jack)...
Oh but wait, you can actually upgrade the original iPhone's firmware and get all of the new features for FREE, unlike other phones that (if they actually do provide updates to begin with) don't provide anything new.
And that begs another question - if he was "forced" to switch to the iPhone, why switch to one that they don't even sell or make anymore. I think he was probably in line day 1.

The only person who said it was a hardware problem was a FINANCIAL ANALYST. Not exactly an authoritative figure...

I'm not sensing any sarcasm here, so I figured I'd chime in and respond...
He said he had an intel iMac... heard of boot camp? I'm pretty sure that iMac can tear XP a new hole.
