  1. Review - Google Chrome for Windows

    4.0.220.1 Beta (Oct 4, 2009)

This browser is not faster than Opera, IE8 or FF on any of the pages I regulary visit. Yes, I've timed them. Problem is ads and flash crap. Chrome feels cramped and simple, and I can't really understand who it's aimed at. It' sjust a lot of hype. Do we really need another browser? One that has absolutely no advantage over the existing ones? Yes, some people say it's fast. But it's not for me on any of my 3 computers. But YMMV.

Since Chrome doesn't have a proper AdBlock (the adblocking extensions either don't work at all, or work poorly) it's completely useless on my netbook. When loading a news site ads can use as much as 2/3 of the downloaded content. When I pay by MiB downloded I prefer not to pay for ads, thank you.
Memory footprint is equal to FF.
This is not a browser for me. I rely on exentions like NoScript, AdBlock, TabMix too much. IF you like it, by all means use it.

  2. Review - Google Chrome for Windows

    4.0.211.4 Beta (Sep 21, 2009)

    Nothing special, really.
If extensions are properly implemented I'll have a go again. Other than that there's nothing better with this compared to any other browser without addons/extensions.

  3. Review - Eudora for Windows

    8.0.0 Beta 7 (Sep 5, 2009)

Terrible. The worst of both worlds.
It's a mess and they won't be able to fix this soon. This is a dying program.

  4. Review - Trillian Astra

    4.0.0.116 Beta (Aug 10, 2009)

Getting there. Got it free from a TrialPay (InkClub).
Still got some issues and it's seriously lacking good skins and icon sets.

I've been a Miranda fanboy for a long time and I still like it. But Miranda's for the people who like to tweak and poke around with plugins and skins and have tweaks and customizations for everything. And hope it doesn't crash... Miranda's got huge potential and it's up to you to make it great.
Astra is good from the start and stays good but you don't have the same level of detail in your customizations. And Astra's more bloat than the vanilla Miranda installation. But not by much. Install a few skins in Miranda, some plugins and you're looking at a 78MB installation.

The Facebook plugin needs work, and some minor issues with plugins and protocols, other than that it feels finished.

    I like it.

  5. Review - ACDSee

    11.0.113 (Feb 24, 2009)

No, I'm sorry. The paid 5-star reviewers (quite a few of them here on FileForum nowadays) make a fatal flaw.
They assume no one else try the latest versions and want to write their opinions. And the duped people who bought the latest versions will rate it 5 stars just beause they bought it and doesn't want to look like they've made a mistake.

The latest incarnations of ACDSee are not worth 5 stars. It's a terrible editing and Photoshop wannabe, and at the same time a slow and horribly bloated browser. What's worth 5 stars with that? GIMP or Paint.NET are free if you want to manipulate or edit pictures - and they're good at it. XnView or a million other quick and light picture browsers are also free. Who in their right mind would pay for something that is just bad at both?

ACDSee fell into that software trap so many other great products have fallen into .. Product's working so good they can't improve it. So they just add more and more features to attract customers (or so they think) and make sure the programmers have something to do beside drinking lattes...
This might sound like "added value" - but it's not in this case. It started out as a software to browse pictures and was, hands down, the best. Version 5 is still one of the best picture browsers ever made. Fast, light and with enough features to make it a Must Have software.
After that they just added more eye candy, more features and - let's face it - more bloat. ACDSee takes so long to load nowadays they had to add a new "quick" browsing mode to try and quiet their own paid customers who complained!
I'm sorry, but this is not Photoshop but at the same time it is not a simple picture browser either. It's something in between and unfortunately neither is any good anymore. One is too limited to be useful, the other is too bloated and slow.
    But the GUI is pretty.
