I looked on the website and the trial lasts one month.
A 12 month subscription costs US $49.95. A bit pricey for one pc.

Thank you for being so articulate, PC Tool. I will refrain from any similar comments.
My basic point is that while 7 is better than Vista many of the same issues are still there. DRM issues were an example.
I have experimented with 7 and Ubuntu and discovered that Linux has come a very long way over the years. Ubuntu, at least, is very usable, fast, and is missing most of the issues that lurk in Vista and, it appears, in 7. If I had no need for a couple of programs that run only on Windows [yes I know about Wine], and was looking to move from XP, I would probably opt for Ubuntu. 7 has nothing that draws me to it over Ubuntu and the buried 'features' that have come out in beta testing are pushing me away from 7. That said, I am not motivated right now to leave XP.

All of this discussion begs the question.........why would I "upgrade" to Windows 7? The beta looks nice but, once again, MS has buried DRM bits and pieces in it -- and who knows what else that has yet to be uncovered.
So again I ask, why would I "upgrade" to Windows 7 when Linux does not have these issues? Ubuntu is looking better and better.

My drive is working fine but because it is one of the affected models, I called in and talked to tech support who took all the details. I was given a case number and told that in 24-48 hours I would be emailed instructions and a link for a flash to update the firmware. That was over a week ago and still no email. On top of that, their 1-800 phone system has become "temporarily" non-functional this week regardless of which option you select. And as if that was not enough, an earlier update on the website caused more bricked drives. Obviously I do not want to do anything that will cause my drive to kill itself so I am waiting and waiting.
I got tired of waiting today so I found a regular long distance number into Seagate in California [my local Seagate number does not return calls!]. The very helpful lady transferred me to someone in call escalations. I go voicemail. Here I sit still waiting. And waiting.
Not a good way to handle the situation Seagate! Communicate with your customers when you say you will. Don't leave us in the dark. That will just anger people and make them more likely to join the class action law suits that I sadly think will follow this episode.
Do right by your customers Seagate and quickly -- it will be far cheaper than having to deal with ravenous lawyers!

overlandpark4me, they probably got their stats from the same place as the RIAA: they just made them up! Just like the RIAA, they will repeat and repeat them and suddenly because they have been heard so often, they become accepted as correct.
They have no way to measure what they are pretending to put forward as a fact. This is just part of a huge PR campaign to launch this new tactic.
And you are right............the artists get virtually nothing from music sales. The recording companies grab most of the money. Why else would a growing number of artists start their own labels other than to get some more of what is due to them for their hard work. But it is better for sympathy to pretend that the artists are losing big time because the huge conglomerates losing some more profit would not get much sympathy.

Unless there is something significant missing from this story, the judge, the prosecutor, and the detective should all have to hand in their licences or badges. This is just such a stupid outcome for this case that it only establishes two things: first, the utter incompetence of those who prosecuted her and found her guilty; and second, the fact that the power of the state can brow beat an innocent person into admitting guilt. Both outcomes cry out for remedial action!
